HUNGARY, SLOVAKIA, AUSTRIA, GERMANY & FRANCE HERE we COME!!!!

EEEEEKKKKK you guys, here’s the tea: Linda and I have been hired to produce & host a series of videos and content for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA)!!!

We’re headed over to Europe with a crew to promote their very first Global River Cruise Expo that’s taking place next March in Budapest! (if there are any travel advisors reading this you should 100% plan to go it’s gonna be INSANE)

And for anyone not in the travel advisor world - ASTA is the world’s largest association of travel professionals. Their responsibility is to advocate for travel advisors, the travel industry, and basically anyone who loves to travel (aka YOU!).

We’ve got a jam-packed schedule and are going to be filming nonstop throughout Budapest before we get on this EPIC river cruise down the Danube visiting some charming towns in Slovakia, Austria & Germany!!

After we wrap filming, Linda and I are popping over to France to scope out some potential spots for a Gals Abroad Group trip in 2022 ;) CLICK HERE TO MAKE SURE YOU DON’T MISS WHEN THESE TRIPS GO LIVE

Truly, when I think about the jobs I’ve been DREAMING of since I launched my travel hosting biz - THIS would be it. I honestly can’t even begin to articulate how grateful and humbled I am to be working on this project with Linda.

We’ll be gone for about 3 weeks so be sure you’re keeping an eye on my Instagram if you want to catch some #bts from our shoots.

PS - if you’re interested in visiting Hungary, unfortunately, the country is not open to American tourists at this time (only business travel is allowed), I’ll keep you posted on when this changes but until then - save my recs for future reference.

  1. FAV PURCHASE - Okay…so I have a confession to make…I’ve been cheating on Rent the Runway lol. Okay well not really I’ve just got a new rental mistress that I don’t publicly share (cause I’m still an RTR Ambassador code RTRALLEP for 40% off two months) BUT for the past year, I’ve been renting with Nuuly in addition to my RTR membership. And I gotta say I LOVE the variety of styles & pieces available. Nuuly is owned by the company the owns Free People, Anthropologie & Urban Outfitters but they have TONS of brands available to rent. You can have 6 pieces out at a time (or pay extra for more slots) and swap them out each month. If you’re interested in giving them a try click this link for $10 off your first month.

  2. FAV PODCAST - If you’re interested in understanding some of the biggest news stories from around the world but in an easily digestible and not confusing way - listen to Worldly. It’s REALLY interesting and they cover everything from the current crisis in Cuba to the Israel-Gaza war and Canada’s reckoning with residential schools.

HI AND BYE AGAIN…LOLZ

Life update: Your girl is truly living her best Shot Girl Summer life because Linda and I are about to head back to Europe next week!

EEEKKK!! We’ve been hired to produce & host a series of videos and content for a really big organization in the Travel Advisor world!! I’m purposely being vague until I can officially share more details next week (post-contract signing lol).

We’ve hired a crew and will be gone for about 20 days, visiting 5 countries (insert exploding emoji head). Guys, I have to tell you that I have DREAMED about landing a gig like this, and being able to work alongside Linda has to be one of the coolest parts of my job.

I know I sound like a broken record but I cannot tell you how important it is to write down your goals and dreams as if they have already happened and take small baby steps each day that will get you towards that goal. Technically, I’ve been working towards these dreams for nearly 10 years (the past 3 specifically in the travel industry). So while this kinda feels like it’s all happening overnight…it’s been a LONGGGGGG road to get to this point.

But if you want to get after your own goals and dreams and want to see how I manifest & goal set - click here.

This year has been nothing short of magical career & life moments and after the “He Who Must Not Be Named” (ifykyk) year I am FULLY accepting all of the abundance coming my way. And I am wishing the same for YOU.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TO GREECE

I had a lot of questions about what it’s like traveling to Greece right now and I figured the easiest way to answer ALLADEM would be to do it in one YouTube video. SO here’s everything (ish) you need to know before you go to Greece in 2021.

PS - always always always double-check with official sources rather than just going off of a YouTube video when planning travel right now. My intention with this video is simply to share my observations and explain the current process for traveling to Greece as an American so that it feels less overwhelming for you. But things can change in the blink of an eye so make sure to check the links in the description of the video to confirm current rules and regulations ;)

PPS - I’ll be putting together vlogs in the coming weeks from all the destinations we visited with recs in ALL of them so stay tuned ;)

HAPPY ENDING (AKA SOMETHING I FOUND FUNNY THIS WEEK)

I just need to know how I put in a request on my next flight to ensure that these are my flight attendants…please advise…THANK YOU

HELLO FROM PAROS!!

It’s official…I’ve fallen in love with this island and in a few hours I’m going to have to leave and I truly feel like I might cry (only a few destinations have ever made me feel that way).

There’s something about this effortlessly enchanting island and its mountainous hills dotted with white homes that completely captures you. The towns are charming, the waters are so clear you can see straight through them and around every corner there are magical places like this. The crowds here feel more international which I adore and I’ve already made friends from France, Morocco, Belgium, and Ireland (SCORE!).

Paros is smack dab in the middle of the Cyclades, the group of islands that includes Santorini and Mykonos, and has quickly grown in popularity in recent years. While I adore Santorini and Mykonos and feel that both are certainly worth visiting at least once, in your life, I feel like Paros is an island I can come back to year after year.

I can’t wait to put together my guides and videos from this portion of the trip so you can see just how stunning this destination truly is. Oh, and if a girls trip to Greece in 2022 sounds like something you’d be interested in, I highly suggest getting your name on my Gals Abroad Group trip newsletter ;) Click here to get on the list.

  1. In Greece, It’s Almost Normal - I have to say it’s felt REALLY incredible to be traveling again. A big part of that was feeling safe and comfortable while exploring and interacting with other travelers in Greece. While mask mandates are loosening and curfews are being lifted - Greece

  2. Even celebs know Greece is where it’s at! Justin Bieber ate dinner at the same restaurant Linda and I dined at in Naousa on Paros. Tom Hanks has a home on Antiparos and the day before we arrived was seen having dinner with Paul McCartney at Barbarossa in Naousa. Demi Moore & the fam are in Santorini. 1. THESE VALENTINO ROCK STUD LOOKALIKES - high heels and Greece do not mix so I love to wear a pair of elevated gladiator sandals that work day and night when I’m wanting to dress up a look. I wore these sandals virtually every day and now they’re on sale and come in a few different colors!

  2. THE ONLY SUNSCREEN I WEAR - I learned the hard way when it comes to the importance of reapplying sunscreen in Greece lol. This is my FAVORITE clean brand of sunscreen I’ve been wearing for years. I use this for my face, this for my body and this powder to reapply during the day.

  3. MY NEW FAV SUNNIES - I always bring WAY too many sunglasses on vacation (options right?!) but this trip the only pair I reached for every day were these. They come in a ton of different colors and lens tints and the polarized ones are on sale RN!

  4. HEAD SCARFS (ALL OF THEM) - I love wearing colorful headscarves to keep my hair in check while out on the water or when things get windy. While the ones I have are a mix of vintage and new my FAVORITE brand of colorful silk scarves are from Johnny Was.

  5. MY TRAVEL HAT - I never travel without at least 2-3 hats, they’re a staple for me. This time I brought this dark coral Brixton Straw hat (now on sale) and this extremely EXTRA hat (which is now out of stock but here’s one by the same designer that’s almost the same).

HAPPY ENDING (AKA SOMETHING I FOUND FUNNY THIS WEEK)

HELLO FROM GREECE!!

More specifically hello from Athens! I can’t tell you how THRILLED I am to be lucky enough to travel to Greece right now & even more excited to be visiting all-new destinations that I’ve NEVER explored before. I’m already BLOWN away by Athens - a city I’ve overlooked for years which I’m now ashamed to admit…

In the past year, we’ve all had varying degrees of loss & hardship and I feel incredibly fortunate to have come out of this global pandemic relatively unscathed. But being unable to do my job for more than a year was a huge blow & the fact that I’m able to be back in Europe for the first time since the end of 2019 is a MAJOR win. I will NEVER take this job or my privilege to travel the world for granted again.

I’m really glad that I can be your boots-on-the-ground guide for anyone thinking of visiting Greece in the coming months. While, the entire experience of traveling to Greece right now has been relatively easy - there are a few things you need to know before you go and I’ve broken them down in this post here.

If you want to follow along on mine and Linda’s adventures or are interested to know what it’s like to travel through Greece in 2021 make sure you keep an eye on my IG stories!

WANT TO TRAVEL TO GREECE?!

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

  • First and foremost you must complete this passenger locator form (PLF) before you arrive at the airport for your flight to Greece. This must be done at least a day before your flight but I’d recommend doing this even earlier.

  • You will also need to present either your vaccination card (at least 14 days after your final jab), a negative PCR test (taken within 72 hours of arrival) or proof of antibodies from a laboratory.

  • Linda and I have been really impressed with all the COVID protocols here in Greece. Masks are still required indoors and indoor dining is restricted. However we’ve been told that these restrictions will be going away as of July 1st.

  • In general everyone we’ve spoken to is thrilled to see travelers return as SO much of Greece’s economy relies on tourism. Their vaccine roll out is ramping up and all of the hospitality staff we’ve spoken to has been fully vaccinated.

  • If you want help planning a trip to Greece, you can always shoot Linda an email to hire her to plan your next trip!

WOW-WHAT A WEEK…

I’m writing this as we’re packing up our bags and getting ready to check out of the Langham and head home to shoot the final scenes of the pilot. I don’t think I’ve fully had a moment to process all that’s happened over the past 4 days but all I can say is it’s been a WILD & unforgettable ride.

What’s really interesting to me about this whole process is how calm (for the most part lol) I’ve felt this entire time. From pitching the initial idea to network execs to scheduling and shooting, I’ve been pretty zen. This is not normal for me haha so I’m not sure what it means but a part of me thinks it’s a good sign.

There are SO many hilarious and unexpected moments that have unfolded throughout this filming process that had me doubled over laughing. It’s been such a treat getting to work with my videographer Stefan once again after a year apart because of COVID. Fun fact about Stefan - before he came to film this, he was directing the latest Kids Bop music videos and commercials which I think is HILARIOUS.

Most importantly, I’m so grateful that no matter what happens in this entire process, Linda and I are making memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. And I’m BEYOND proud of how she’s been able to adapt and shine while doing something she’s NEVER done before.

I’ll be honest that I have zero idea when I can share this pilot with you. But when I can, I hope that you will laugh just as hard at the antics Linda and I get up to.

I’M FILMING A PILOT!!!

I feel like I should clarify that sentence…I’m filming a pilot for a TV show not like filming an airplane pilot…although that would be cool too but just not necessarily worthy of an announcement hahaha.

OKAY SO ANYWAYS…This week Linda & I are filming the pilot episode for our mother-daughter travel show!!!

Honestly, that sentence doesn’t even feel real…This moment has been YEARS in the making but it took a global pandemic to help me realize that I needed to stop waiting for the “perfect” moment when I would feel “ready” to make my biggest dream a reality.

So after months of planning, preliminary pitching, scripting, setting up filming locations and LOADS of help from some of my closest friends & colleagues we’re finally ready to start filming next week. My fabulous videographer/co-producer Stefan is flying in from LA and we will be filming in Chicago & some funny, totally fitting surprise locations.

I’m being purposefully vague because well, I’ve never done anything like this before and I’m not sure how much I can & should share. But I will be sharing bits and pieces of the behind the scenes over on Instagram next week so just be sure to keep your eyes peeled ;)

Now, for anyone not familiar with how this whole process of creating, pitching, and actually getting your show picked up works, don’t ask me hahaha. Not that I’m not happy to share, I am. BUT I’m serious when I say I am quite literally figuring this out as I go along & leaning on the connections, relationships & friendships I’ve built over the years with people who can point me in the right direction or lend a helping hand.

I really went back and forth on whether I should share ANY of this publicly because here’s the thing…there’s no guarantee that a show will come of this. Although we already have one network that is VERY interested (like what!?!?!?!?)

BUT here’s what I do know. At the beginning of this year, I was EXTREMELY intentional about setting BIG goals and putting them out into the universe. And you know what? It WORKED. The abundance I am feeling right now in my career and in my life is unlike anything I’ve experienced.

So while a part of me wants to be like, ooooo well what if it doesn’t work out, don’t jinx it. A BIGGER part of me thinks, well what if sharing this with you right now, leads to someone else who might be able to lend a helping hand? OR even better, it inspires YOU to chase those dreams that might be too big for you to even say out loud.

Trust me when I say I know what it feels like to HATE your job & wish you could turn your passions into your full-time career. And now, as someone who is FINALLY feeling traction on my path to my biggest dreams coming true, I’m here to tell you that it’s possible.

Will it be easy? no. Will you stumble? yes. Will you question everything? sure. Will it take longer than expected? HA yes.

Will it be all worth it? ABSOLUTELY.

So I think this written version of my TEDTALK is long enough so I’ll end it here by asking one simple thing:

Will you take a moment to think about the thing you want most in life, in your career, in your relationship, whatever, and believe with all your heart that it’s possible. Then, do 1 thing (it can be as small as writing it down) that will move you one step closer to making that dream your reality TODAY.

Oooo and while you’re at it, will you send some good vibes Linda’s way? She’s nervous & excited because she’s never done anything like this before + she’s had a stressful couple of days and I think she could use a bit of positive energy being sent her way. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

OKAY NOW, I’M REALLY DONE TALKING HAHA PLEASE ENJOY THIS WEEK’S ABROAD IN YOUR INBOX.

It’s been almost a year since I re-launched my YouTube channel. And as I put the finishing touches on my Memphis Travel Guide video (dropping Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.) I thought I’d re-share one of my favorite videos I created last year that shows you how to turn your backyard into a luxury resort. LOL man we were resourceful last year haha.

HELLO FROM MEMPHIS!

Y’all…listen to me when I say I am BLOWN away by Memphis, Tennessee (also lol to me using y’all). I’m writing this week’s newsletter as I’m wrapping up one of the most fun work trips I’ve had in more than a year. When I tell you I was pleasantly surprised by this destination, I mean that in every sense of the word.

From the diversity of experiences to the vibrant colored buildings and murals to the historic mansions and delicious food - I am telling you, this place is SO cool. I mean have you seen the hotel we are staying at?! If not, you need to click here and check out The Memphian. It’s a Marriott Tribute Portfolio property that literally JUST opened in the Overton Square theatre district and it’s dripping with color and style.

I was down in Memphis working with their tourism board to produce content for their summer travel campaigns & I can’t wait to share these videos my team and I created while we were in town (also shoutout to @jlaurynphotography, if you’re looking for a fabulous female photographer/videographer, HIRE HER). Until then, keep an eye on my Instagram over the next few days as I share some of my favorite things to do in Memphis & if you have any questions you can always shoot me a DM on IG!

IF YOU’RE NEW HERE, HEY!!! Abroad in Your Inbox is a weekly collection of news articles, blog posts, products, podcasts, videos & anything else that’s on the interwebs that will help you navigate this new era of travel, reignite your wanderlust, help you plan a future trip & make you giggle {because what’s the point if we can’t laugh!?}

  1. FAV SERVICE - I’ve had a lot of gals reach out to me over the past week asking where my Memphis outfits were from so I figured it might be a good time for me to re-share my secret to my wardrobe success - Rent the Runway. I’ve been a member since 2016 and I honestly don’t think I can live without it. From looks for work, photoshoots, travel, weddings, every day, etc. pretty much everything I wear is rented. That black gingham dress I wore in Memphis retails for $450 but I can rent that and 7 other items for $135 a month (now that’s a good deal…) So if you’ve ever been curious about trying RTR I have a code that takes 40% off two months of their 8 or 16 item plan (perfect for finding your shot girl summer lewks). And if you have any questions, shoot me a DM on IG

ON THE ROAD AGAIN!

So, my life kinda feels like a runaway train at the moment, and I mean that in the best way possible (I think??). I’m headed out of town this week for a work trip to create videos and content for a tourism board (keep your eyes on my IG to see where I’m headed) and once I’m back Linda & I will be gearing up to shoot the pilot episode of our mother-daughter travel show (omg can you believe?! more on that soon).

Summer travel is booking up, I just got a call from one of my biggest clients for a new gig in the fall and I have to say that I’m trying to figure out if there’s any possible way to clone myself at this point lol.

So until I figure that out, I wanted to share two things that have been really helping manage my stress/overwhelm. First is daily (sometimes more than once) meditation with Headspace or my Peloton app. And then when I’m in full panic mode, I try this journaling practice my friend Neha (who is a career coach) shared with me. I hope that if you’re feeling some type of way, these small practices give you some peace of mind (they def helped me).

I’M IN A DOCUMENTARY?!

So on Friday, I shared that I was featured in a documentary called Lens Flares: Trauma in Journalism. Rather than sharing a new youtube video this week, I figured I’d share the trailer. The documentary was created by one of my former bosses and features some of my former colleagues. The documentary explores how journalists deal with the traumas they experience every day on the job & shares a different side of the industry that I feel is often unspoken.

While it’s not something I typically talk about, one of the main reasons I left my previous job as a TV news reporter was in part because of my involvement in covering the San Bernardino Terrorist attack in 2015. I go into more detail in the film about my experience but you can read some of it here as well.

If you’re interested in watching, there are two options:

  1. You can stream here for $2.99 (but it’s only available tonight)

  2. Or you can stream at the Believe Psychology Film Festival from May 20th to May 22nd at this link right here (this will cost $10 to stream all documentaries in the "Spreading Awareness" category)

If you have or currently work in the TV news industry, I hope this documentary helps you to feel less alone & gives you the resources you need to take the first step in addressing any traumas you may be dealing with.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL MY TRAVEL LOVING MUMS OUT THERE

Words cannot begin to describe how lucky I feel to call the legendary Linda my mom. I’ve put together a little reel highlighting some of her truly epic moments from the past few years and I can’t help but have a big ole grin on my face as I watch it 175 times (it’s basically videos of us drinking around the world hahaha).

But in all seriousness, I feel insanely lucky to have this fierce, adventurous, open minded, free spirit of a woman as my ride or die travel partner in crime & I hope you get to meet her one day (hopefully on a Gals Abroad group trip ;)

I also want to acknowledge that today also might be a difficult day for those who have strained relationships with their moms, are unable to become a mom, have lost their mother or just feel a bit meh about the holiday. I see you, and I want to be respectful of the fact that today may not be a day you look forward to. I’m sending you a big hug your way.

This Wednesday 5/12 from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. CST I am hosting one of my live closet sales with At One Boutique & a portion of the proceeds will be going to my dear friend Neha’s family non-profit Chance Foundation.

They have donated much-needed oxygen concentrators, set up a helpline, and even have plans to create a temporary hospital to meet the high demand for beds. A board member from Chance will be joining the live to tell us more about their efforts and how you can help.

Everyone who shops on Wednesday will be doing their part to help India & we will also have a button on the live sale for you to donate if you don’t wish to shop. Linda and I will be personally matching the total donations that are raised from everyone who shops the sale.

If you’ve never shopped one of my sales all you need to do is CLICK HERE to register & join my IG live on Wednesday. Everything is fixed price & if you want to learn more about what will be up for grabs head to my closet sale highlight on Instagram.

I was BLOWN away by the number of people who began connecting in the comments section. The purpose of me sharing something that many women might be scared to admit was simply to say that we should work on claiming our goals & dreams, even if they look different from what society says they should be. This is a long build up to my point but I wanted to share a new book my friend Jess recommended to me. It’s called ‘The Middle Finger Project’ and I think this would be a fantastic read for anyone who is struggling with imposter syndrome, thinking about leaving their “safe” job or really just wanting to chart their own path in life.

INDIA NEEDS OUR HELP…

For those of you who have been part of my #galsabroad community for a while now, you’ll know how deeply and passionately I feel about India. The people, the colors, the history, the palaces, the spices, the culture I love ALL of it…

When I learned about the dire COVID-19 situation the country is currently facing as the second wave of the virus rips through this massive country, I was devastated. Right now, India’s COVID crisis is the worst since the pandemic began.

1 person dies every 5 minutes in India from Covid 19.

Hospitals are full, oxygen supplies are dwindling, and sick people are dying as they wait to see doctors. The official estimates of infection are more than 300,000 a day which experts believe is being underreported and might reach 500,000 by August.

I am humbly asking, if you have the means, if you would consider donating to one of these vetted, charitable organizations that are actively working to mobilize, set up hotlines, get oxygen and critical care to India RIGHT NOW.

  1. My friend Neha of Somewhere In Between Coaching recently lost a loved one to COVID in India. Her family’s charity Chance Foundation is currently working to set up a hotline to help those in need in India and send oxygen concentrators. You can click here to learn more and to donate.

  2. Author & Coach Jay Shetty is working to raise $1 million dollars for Give India and has teamed up with Indiaspora who will match every dollar donated. You can click here to learn more and to donate now. (WHEN YOU HEAD TO HIS IG PROFILE ON YOUR PHONE YOU’LL BE ABLE TO DONATE)

  • FAV LISTEN - I binged a 5-part podcast series this week called The Improvement Association. It’s by the makers of the Serial podcast & the NYTimes so you know it’s good. It’s a podcast that goes in-depth on a true story of election fraud (I’ve become kind of a politics junkie after the 2020 election…)

  • FAV WATCH - As I gear up to shoot the pilot of my own Mother-Daughter travel show (yeah…it’s happening…) I wanted to share YET AGAIN the inspiration behind our show - Travels with my Father. A TOURIST IN MY OWN CITY

This week I had the chance to produce & film some Choose Chicago videos for National Travel & Tourism Week with the message of welcoming everyone back to the city. The shoots took me to some of Chicago’s most iconic landmarks & attractions like the Shedd Aquarium, the Ledge at Skydeck Chicago, Navy Pier and so many more (you can check out the videos over on @ChooseChicago’s IG page the first week of May).

The whole shoot really got me nostalgic & thinking about how we as locals often write off our home city’s tourist attractions simply because we’ve visited them already. I mean, I can’t tell you how many times I told the representatives from each location that the last time I’d visited was on a field trip in elementary school…

So really my message to you, no matter where you live, think about rediscovering your own hometown or city as the world begins to reopen. I think you’ll be amazed to discover what’s right in your own backyard.

I like how this Vogue article breaks down the actionable things you can do outside of celebrating this conviction.

CURRENTLY OBSESSING OVER

  • A MUST PURCHASE - There are a few things I never travel without and one of them is my pinch provisions mini emergency kit. I discovered these back in college and I SWEAR they’ve saved my a$$ so many times. Essentially they’re these pouches that have all the things you might forget - tampons, deodorant, a mini sewing kit, breath mints, stain remover, the list goes on. Plus they even have ones that are event-specific like for a road trip, a festival (remember those…), and weddings. They’re perfect to always have in your carry-on when you need them.

  • A MUST WATCH - Thursday was Earth Day and Linda and I decided to watch the tough & controversial documentary - ‘Seaspiracy’ on Netflix which follows director Ali Tabrizi as he travels from Asia to Europe and back working to uncover the shocking truths behind the commercial fishing industry and the corruption that’s lead to marine destruction. To get a better understanding of the documentary, I think this NY Times review is a great place to start. But I’ll leave you with one of the most shocking statements from the doc - if we continue taking wild fish at the levels we are today, oceans will be empty by 2048…

  • A MUST READ - Anthony Bourdain’s ‘World Travel: An Irreverent Guide’ was just released last week and is meant to serve as a guide to several of his favorite places in the world (43 countries are included). It’s a thick book (480 pages) and I’ve taken to reading about 1 country each night since it arrived. The book is a mix of practical travel advice plus a deeper look at Bourdain's life through personal essays from his family, friends, and colleagues. It’s as perfectly Bourdain as you’d imagine and has me excited and eager to get back to exploring the world.

I'M FULLY VACCINATED!!!

Man, if you would have told me a year ago that I'd be writing this email sharing that I was fully vaccinated I honestly might not have believed you. Didn't getting the vaccine seem like such a long shot this time last year?!

Before I got the shot this was entirely my entire mood and then came the dreaded side effects...I popped a poll into my IG stories yesterday and 62% of people said they experienced chills, fever and body aches after their second shot.

SAME SAME.

I should make it very clear that I am 100% pro-vaccine and would honestly rather deal with 1 crummy day vs RONA but also if you are scheduled to get the second dose of the Moderna vax I might clear or lighten your schedule the next day if you can...cause I was no use to anyone for 36 hours post vax.

CURRENTLY OBSESSING OVER

  1. FAV PURCHASE - After my trip to St. Lucia I got A LOT of questions on how I traveled with multiple hats and my answer every time is TOPTOTE. These are one of the items I literally NEVER travel without. Essentially it’s this super-strong magnetic clip that attaches to your backpack, purse or even your carry-on! I stack my hats on top of one another, clip them together and boom you’re able to travel with your hat and don’t have to pack it. (Typically I put the hats on top of my rolling carry-on in the bin or slide them down next to me if I’m sitting in the window seat. You can see what these look like here. But TRUST these are worth every penny.

  2. FAV READ - I feel like we all had a collective OMG moment when Amanda Gorman’s Vogue cover dropped this week but if you haven’t read it, take the time to do so. I firmly believe we will be hearing more and more about this trailblazer as the years go by.

  3. FAV WATCH - I have always been a fan of Refinery 29’s original video content and World Wide Wed is no exception. It’s a digital series that showcases different wedding traditions from various cultures. I LOVED the glam and how you get a front-row seat to some of the most extravagant and interesting weddings.

  4. FAV LISTEN - The Importance Of Pronouncing Names Correctly - from my favorite NPR podcast Life Kit. Listen it’s important.‬

So if you:

  • Want to learn what it’s like to travel to St. Lucia during COVID-19

  • Want a breakdown of what you need in order to visit

  • Watch Linda feed birds sugar from a coffee cup and lose her damn mind everytime she sees a new bird species

Hi! I just booked a trip to Greece for this June to celebrate my wedding anniversary! We can only stay 8 days, and I would love suggestions for an itinerary, hotels and excursions! Thanks so much! - SABRINA

OMG GREECE! I’m thrilled to see that Greece plans to open its borders to foreign tourists this summer! My top 3 favorite islands would have to be Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes. I’ve been to Santorini 3 times now and have put all my suggestions into this Destination Guide & Video (one of my first as a content creator lol don’t judge the suggestions are still great!). I would do 3 days on Santorini, 3 on Mykonos and 2 on Rhodes. If you’d like a more custom & in-depth itinerary you should totally reach out to my mom Linda who just so happens to be a luxury travel advisor ;)

If you’re subscribed to my newsletter, each week you’ll be able to ask me ANY question {travel related or otherwise} and I will pick one person each week to respond to!

DID YOU HEAR THE NEWS?!?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or just totally checked out this holiday weekend (Happy Easter to those who celebrate) you’ve heard the GREAT news that the CDC has given its blessing to vaccinated Americans to travel again! I shared my thoughts on the subject & broke down the basics in my IG post yesterday, but if you haven’t weighed in just yet, I’d love to hear from you!

I have to say that I’m thrilled. Any amount of positive travel news these days is a HUGE win for the travel industry and a step towards a return to travel. All that said, there are a lot of nuances to this update & this is by no means a get-out-of-jail-free card. I think we all have to be super-mindful, no matter our vaccine status, to still wear masks and social distance especially when we travel.

Nonetheless, as Linda and I get ready to receive our second shot in 2 weeks, I’m going to be smiling just thinking of all the great travels that await me once I’m fully vaccinated! Outside of that big news, I’m settling back into my post-vacation routine & will be sharing more from our trip to St. Lucia over on my YouTube channel next week (so make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss my Sugar Beach tour/review)

  4. Delta to Stop Blocking Middle Seats in May - proving all good things eventually must come to an end…

  1. FAV PURCHASE - Guys…I’m obsessed with my new Away luggage set. IDK what took me so long but I am FULLY on board. I LOVE how sleek and sturdy they are, the fact that you have 100 days to test them out and return for a full refund (you won’t) and their compression system inside that ensures you never overstuff your bag. I got the Serena Williams teal color which is just bright enough to make spotting your luggage a piece of cake. I’ve got a code for $20 off any bag or piece of luggage if you’re looking to upgrade for all that travel you’ve got coming up ;)

  2. FAV WATCH - As someone who is currently working on the pilot of her own travel show (oh yeah…dropping that bomb for my most loyal Abroad in Your Inbox readers) I’m constantly keeping my out for new and creative travel shows and I gotta say that this is by far the coolest one I’ve ever come across. HELLO FROM PARADISE AKA ST. LUCIA!!!

I’m trying to put into words how I’m feeling right now and honestly, all I can think of is bliss. This is the first international trip I’ve taken with Linda since our visit to London in 2019. As someone who lives, breathes and works in the world of travel, being able to once again do what I love after more than a year feels too good to be true.

Linda and I are staying at Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort, that she’s put many of her honeymoon clients at in the past. This former sugar plantation is smack dab in the middle of St. Lucia’s twin pitons which are these dormant volcanic plugs that jut up from the ground and are the most iconic landmarks of the destination. If you want to learn more about this luxurious property, make sure you’re following me on IG where I’ll be taking you along on our mother-daughter-moon lol.

All this to say, I feel like we’re getting closer and closer to a return to travel. We’re certainly not there just yet but if feels like it’s right at our fingertips. With more flight route expansions, a growing list of countries welcoming vaccinated tourists and even plans to resume cruising, I feel like I can actually see the light at the end of this dark ass tunnel.

IF YOU’RE NEW, HEY!!! Abroad in Your Inbox is a weekly collection of news articles, blog posts, products, podcasts, videos & anything else that’s on the interwebs that will help you navigate this new era of travel, reignite your wanderlust, help you plan a future trip & make you giggle {because what’s the point if we can’t laugh!?}

TRAVEL

  1. Why Using a Travel Specialist is More Important than Ever - I’m a bit biased here (my mom is a travel agent) but I have to say that navigating this new travel world can be COMPLICATED even for the experts. From testing requirements to navigating ever-changing restrictions and sudden last-minute changes, it’s essential to have someone who can help you so that you’re not stressed trying to figure this all out yourself. So if you’re feeling ready to get out and explore a destination that’s not in your backyard I’d HIGHLY recommend working with an agent. You can get in touch with my mom’s agency Scorby Travel and Cruise here!

  2. 10 Mistakes to Avoid While Traveling Abroad During the COVID-19 Pandemic - Felt that this was fitting since Linda and I are on our first international trip right now.

  3. 3 things to know about your CDC vaccine card - I’m so glad The Points Guy wrote this article because I’ve literally had no idea what to do with my vaccine card. I’ve had it in my wallet but then got paranoid that it would get stolen if my wallet was taken (lol literally my most prized possession right now).

  4. The Best Bird Watching Spots in the US - I’m literally only putting this in here to test Linda to see if she reads my newsletter, which I know she doesn’t. But if she did, this article would be right up her alley. And based on how many of you told me on stories that your parents are crazy bird watchers too…feel free to share this with them lol.

COVID

  1. Can people immunized against the coronavirus still spread it to others? - It’s a question I’ve asked myself often my first dose of the vaccine but thanks to a new study of more than 12,000 vaccinated college students, I think we’ll have a better understanding of whether or not vaccinated people can spread COVID.

CURRENTLY OBSESSING OVER

  1. FAV PURCHASE - THIS IS NOT A DRILL…I FINALLY FOUND AFFORDABLE CUTE SWIMSUITS! I’ve always been SUPER skeptical of Instagram Clothing boutiques…TBH I’ve been burned too many times. But against my better judgment, I took a chance and ordered a slew of the cutest, most fabulous & AFFORDABLE bathing suits for my trip to St. Lucia. And you know what?!?!? THEY WERE A HOME RUN! Literally loved all of them. Dropping the link to the website here. Also, some things to note, I ordered a size up (L), the quality is REALLY GOOD but don’t expect L SPACE buttery material and these will take a few weeks to arrive unless you want to pay $100 for express shipping (lol).

  2. FAV PODCAST - IF YOU ONLY LISTEN TO ONE PODCAST THIS WEEK, MAKE IT BE THIS ONE. Last summer, hopefully, all of us, made a pledge to educate ourselves and be allies to members of the BIPOC community. The travel industry specifically had to take a HARD look at itself and recognize the lack of diversity throughout its sectors. Now, almost a year later, it’s time for a check-in. I loved this convo between Evita Robinson, founder of the Nomadness Travel Tribe and Audacity Fest, and Jessica Nabongo, the first black woman to visit every country in the world, and Martinique Lewis, author of the ABC Travel Green Book and a Condé Nast Traveler advisory board member. THERE IS SO MUCH WORK TO BE DONE. Listen to this and figure out a way to be part of the solution.

ABROAD AT HOME

I’m taking this week off from my Abroad at Home series but will be filming furiously while we’re in St. Lucia. I’ll be putting together a video recapping our trip, a review of the resort we’re staying at & a video running through what traveling internationally is like right now.

But if you’re chomping at the bit and NEED TRAVEL CONTENT NOW then may I suggest checking out my Abroad at Home playlist?! There are videos on India, Croatia, and Argentina + a video that walks you through my exact process of how I make my bucket list travel dreams come to life!

HAPPY ENDING

Ever been a victim of the unintended mass email?! I was DYING over this story of what happened when a group of more than two hundred buyers of luxe sofas from ABC Carpet got a group e-mail about a delivery delay… the responses ranged from anger, frustration, commiseration, bad jokes, and matchmaking. Read if you’re in need of a little chuckle.

I GOT MY FIRST VACCINE!!

After weeks of waking up at 6 a.m. trying to secure an appointment for Linda and me on every vaccine supplying website you could imagine, we FINALLY got ourselves booked, and on Monday we got our first shot! And while I know we aren’t fully vaccinated yet and it will be quite sometime before vaccine access becomes more equitable, this was a major win for us. I just hope everyone who wants to be vaccinated is able to have a similar celebration moment.

Outside of this major win, I know I sound like a broken record, but I feel that change is on the horizon. The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and this time of year always reminds me of new beginnings. I feel like I’m walking around with an extra spring in my step, which might in part be because Linda and I are headed out on our first international trip since 2019…{keeping where we’re headed a surprise until we get there cause idk it sounds fun lol}.

TRAVEL

  1. MORE COUNTRIES ARE OPENING TO VACCINATED TRAVELERS - This week was full of exciting news for travelers who have or plan to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Here are the latest openings:

    1. Thailand plans to waive quarantine requirements for vaccinated travelers

    2. Iceland is finally ready to welcome eligible Americans — for real this time

    3. Summer vacations to Greece look promising for Americans this year

    4. Americans can now visit 90+ countries and territories — here’s the complete list

  2. 3 WAYS TO CHECK HOW FULL YOUR FLIGHT IS - one of the biggest questions you might have when checking into an upcoming flight is ‘Is my flight going to be jam-packed?’ It was a question many of us only causally considered pre-pandemic, now it’s top of mind. I love how this article dives into some simple strategies on how you can *try* to avoid booking a full flight.

  3. 9 FAIRYTALE CASTLES YOU CAN RENT ON AIRBNB - because find me someone who doesn’t want to have a sleepover in a castle at least once in their life…

ACTIVISM

In light of recent horrific attacks against the Asian American community, I wanted to take a moment to send love to all of the Asian Americans in my Gals Abroad community. This has, and always will be a safe and inclusive space and I will continue to be an ally and use my platform to speak out against racism and work to dismantle the pervasive white supremacy in our country.

I wanted to share this Travel & Leisure article that gives you 7 tangible ways you can support the Asian Community right now.

CURRENTLY OBSESSING OVER

  1. FAV PURCHASE - Linda and I have been really making an effort to eat healthier & cleaner in 2021…honestly I feel like I say that every year lol. But truly one of the things that has helped keep us on track is Daily Harvest. We’ve been getting deliveries since March of last year and I can’t say enough about the quality & efficiency of these little meals. IDK about you but I don’t always have the time to make healthy meals from scratch so this is my perfect quick go-to for breakfast and lunch. They have smoothies, oatmeal bowls, flatbreads and even ice cream. If this sounds like something you’d like to try click here to get $25 off your first box!

  2. FAV READ - I’ve been working my way through Brendon Burchard’s book “High Performance Habits” and I think this is a GREAT read for anyone, no matter if you’re an entrepreneur or working a 9-5, on how to LEVEL up your life on all levels. The book walks you through what makes extraordinary people that way and how you can follow in their footsteps. I’ve started a notes page on my phone while I’m listening on audible and it is JAM PACKED with tips lol.

  3. FAV FIND - IDK WHO NEEDS TO HEAR THIS BUT EVERYTHING ON ANTHROPOLOGIE THIS WEEKEND IS 20% OFF! It ends tonight so hurry hurry hurry!! I snagged this super cute Farm Rio PJ set, this perfect beach bag & some Volcano diffuser oils.

WOW WHAT A WEEK…AND I MEAN THAT IN THE BEST WAY!

IDK what’s going on in the universe but I feel her doing some wild and crazy things for your girl and I am here for it 1,000%. If you guys follow me on IG, which I’m assuming you do, you might have seen me annoyingly tease that I just landed probably the biggest gig of my career {I still can’t share because contracts…} but believe me when I can…OMG you’ll know lol.

Since then, I’ve landed possibly 4 other hosting jobs, booked my first international trip for the end of this month, and secured vaccine appointments for Linda & myself. My word for 2021 is abundance and let me tell you the amount of gratitude I feel right now is astronomical.

I’m sharing all of this not to brag but simply to encourage you to really start speaking the things you want in your life into existence. Every day I write down 10 dreams that I have for myself in the present tense as if they’ve already happened. And I know this is a little woo woo but I am living proof that this sh*t works so why not give it a go? What do you have to lose?

  1. A LOOK BACK ON THE LOST YEAR FOR 6 TRAVEL PROFESSIONALS - The New York Times put together a beautiful, painful, powerful & somewhat hopeful piece that features what 2020 looked like for 6 people who work in different sectors of the travel industry around the world. From a safari guide to a commercial pilot, this piece really gave me perspective on just how devastating this year has been for my industry but also gave me hope that better days are coming.

  2. HOW 6 DESTINATIONS AROUND THE WORLD HAVE SURVIVED A YEAR WITHOUT TRAVEL - Another NYTimes piece that dives into how tourist destinations like Hoi An, Vietnam, the Singapore Airport and Paris, France have survived a year without tourists.

  4. WHAT FULLY VACCINATED TRAVELERS NEED TO KNOW BEFORE PLANNING A TRIP - From mask policies to gathering with other fully vaccinated friends, I love how this Conde Nast Traveler piece really breaks down some of your biggest vaccine travel questions.

  5. HOW TO RENT AN RV FOR $1 A DAY - Like many travelers this past year, I’ve come close to booking an RV trip {might have some exciting news on that front soon…} but if the $$$ has had you second-guessing pulling the trigger this article might offer a solution.

CURRENTLY OBSESSING OVER

  1. FAV PURCHASE - If you watched this year’s Best Travel Gift Guide video, then you know how obsessed I am with Stoney Clover Lane - a colorful line of customizable travel accessories. I’ve always struggled with finding the perfect travel case for my sunnies & with my trip to St. Lucia coming up at the end of the month I wanted to treat myself to a new piece of travel packing gear. Enter their sunglass travel case - it’s PERFECT, has adjustable compartments, and can be used to store more than just sunnies. PS this is where my Alle Abroad backpack is from!

  2. FAV PODCAST - This past week I had the pleasure of being interviewed on the Tin Lounge Podcast - which is a fabulous resource for travel professionals to stay up to date with all the latest travel news, restrictions, trends, etc. {so if you’re into this weekly newsletter you should go subscribe!}. We chatted about my #1 favorite destination in the world, how the heck I won an Emmy {lol} + some ways to repurpose your old travel content you might be sitting on. Click here and give it a listen!

  3. FAV WATCH - Rather than picking 1 thing to recommend this week, I thought I’d share this article that lists 26 travel shows to stream right now! I’m currently catching up on Killing Eve which is WILDLY entertaining and unexpectedly full of fabulous destinations.

  4. FAV READ - After finishing last week’s fav read I have to admit I found it hard to find a book that could live up to it…And I remember Linda {my mom} raving about how much she loved Bill Bryson novels so I thought I’d give one of his more popular titles “In a Sunburned Country” a try & I have to say I LOVE IT. His writing style is just the right amount of dry humor and education that makes me really excited to visit Australia one day.

HAPPY SUNDAY FROM THE LANGHAM CHICAGO!

I gotta be honest…I’ve really missed waking up in hotels. There’s just something really fabulous and fun about waking up in a luxurious bed that isn’t your own…{and yes I know how that sounds and yes I am in a romantic relationship with luxury hotels…}.

As I write this I’m sitting at the desk in this suite that overlooks the Chicago River, the sun is dancing on the water and I haven’t felt this “normal” in well…a year. It’s funny though…if this was a “normal” year I’d be just starting my job working as the entertainment reporter for the BNP Paribas Open in Palm Springs. A month-long gig I look forward to every year.

But instead in this new “normal”, I’m finding little victories to celebrate and getting to have an early birthday staycation in a city I love with one of my best gal pals is cause for celebration - cue the champagne!!

I can’t wait to share some really exciting developments {even more than I annoyingly teased in last week’s installment} and I’m hoping that I can share more details with you next week. Until then, enjoy these stories {especially the one about travel & sex lol…}

  1. FAVORITE PURCHASE(S) - Last week I went a little crazy with the travel book purchases…I was trying to up my bookshelf game and felt the urge to buy something colorful and beautiful to fill my shelves. So I snagged The Rainbow Atlas, which is a guide to the 500 most colorful places in the world! And if you’re looking to bring your favorite destinations into your home decor, check out Travel Home which was written by a fellow mother and daughter travel duo which I think is just so cool. You can check out the entire list of favorites here + a list of my favorite books to read while traveling {or not lol}.

  2. FAVORITE PODCAST - I’ve been listening to NPR’s Fresh Air Podcast before Podcasts were a thing {Linda always had us listening to Terry Gross on our daily drives to my dance practice} And what I love best about Terry is her INCREDIBLE interview skills like there is really no other interviewer like her…{maybe Oprah}. Check out her interview with Sacha Baron Cohen about his latest Borat film and why Trump was the reason he felt like he needed to bring back the character.

  3. FAVORITE READ - I’ve been listening to this book called “What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding” and omg I feel like the author and I are the SAME humans…So to all my fellow independent single women out there who would prefer to spend their time catching flights, exploring the world and having wild relationships with international lovers…you NEED to read this book.

HAPPY ENDING

I think I’m a bit late to the game on this one, but maybe you are too…HAVE YOU SEEN PRINCE HARRY ON JAMES CORDAN’S SHOW?! OMG, it’s soooo good and honestly, I was surprised by how funny and normal Harry is {or maybe he just did a good job of faking it lol} Either way, if you haven’t seen it yet, WATCH IT. And then get ready for Oprah’s interview with Harry & Meghan tonight 8-10 pm EST. Apparently, Gayle says this is Oprah’s best interview EVER.

HEY YOU!! HAPPY SUNDAY! I AM BEAMING AS I WRITE THIS!

Idk if I’m being overly optimistic or naive but I feel that things are looking up. The weather has been crazy warm here in Chicago {lol that means it’s in the 40s woahhh wild} and we’re supposed to have a few days in the 50s next week. The days are getting longer, March is my birthday month and I have a few work trips lined up that I cannot WAIT to spill all the deets on. SO YO GIRL IS FEELING LIKE HER OLD SELF {well kinda lol}

I was just having this conversation with Linda that one of the many things COVID has taught me is to celebrate and express gratitude for the little things. I know that sounds so woowoo but truly, if the sun is shining, my family and I are healthy and travel is on the horizon, WE GUCCI!

IF YOU’RE NEW, HEY!!! Abroad in Your Inbox is a weekly collection of news articles, blog posts, products, podcasts, videos & anything else that’s on the interwebs that will help you navigate this new era of travel, reignite your wanderlust, help you plan a future trip & make you giggle {because what’s the point if we can’t laugh!?}

  1. FAV PURCHASE - I HAVE GOOD BATHINGSUIT NEWS! Lol, you guys… I was dying at how many of you shared your favorite places to shop for swimsuits that weren’t thongs and didn’t annihilate your bank account over on IG after I shared that I was looking for a new swimmy. So I figured I’d report back with my research and findings and share some of the suits I snagged based on your recs. {I’ll be sure to give you all my thoughts over on IG once these arrive ;}

    1. I am LOVING J. Crews’ swimwear & many of the styles are on sale RN {score} I snagged this seersucker bikini top, high-waisted bottoms & coverup all for under $150.

    2. ASOS has always been my spot for affordable & flattering suits. I currently have this polka dot one-piece & this coral tie die cut out piece in my cart

  2. FAV PODCAST - I guarantee you that NPR’s Life Kit Podcast will change your life. I know that’s a bold statement but I have yet to find a more helpful podcast on quite literally ANY topic. If there’s something you’re struggling with right now, there’s a 99.9% chance Life Kit did an episode on that.

LISTEN TO LINDA

Hello, Alle’s friends!

I come baring positive sustainable travel news! I’m becoming more and more optimistic about the return to sustainable international travel once it is safe for us to do so. I wanted to share an article I just read in the New York Times about the travel insustry’s sustainable comeback. Sustainability in tourism has been a topic I’ve always been passionate about and a major focus of mine when booking travel for my clients. This article gives me hope that positive changes are already being made to positively impact the communities we visit and the world we all live in.

This article walks you through some of the many sustainable initiatives that have been started during the pandemic.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN CHICAGO

  1. CHICAGO RESTAURANT WEEK IS 3/19 - 4/4 - Now more than ever it’s important for us to support our local Chicago restaurants and this year’s restaurant week is the perfect opportunity for us to do just that! This year’s event will offer dine-in, delivery, and/or carry-out options from 265 restaurants representing 34 distinct Chicago neighborhoods. Personally, I’m most excited to support Virtue Restaurant in Hyde Park, Bar Roma in Andersonville & Carnivale in West Loop.

  2. DON’T MESS WITH CHICAGO - If I know you like I think I do, you’ve watched Emily in Paris on Netflix {right?!}. And as a fellow Chicagoan, you probably remember the part where she dissed our deep dish pizza {which don’t hate me butttttttt I agree}. All that being said my girl Jenn Lake wrote the BEST open letter to Emily which had me loling at her undying love for Chicago’s staple dish and her cleaver, punny writing that always has me walking away wanting to read more. Do yourself a favor and read it and then follow Jenn because she’s my Chicago color icon.

HAPPY ENDING

My friend Sally sent me this reel yesterday and I literally CACKLEDDDDD. It’s this guy pretending to be late for his flight and rushing around the house grabbing an absurd amount of bags. But the ending is the funniest part and all my fellow mid-western pals can probably totally relate lol.
