Vacation canceled? Summer trip looking like it’s not gonna happen? Wondering if you’re going to have to pretend like your washing machine is the window of a plane and start making TikTok videos (if you’re confused about that last part, click here).

YEAH, SIS, I HEAR YA CAUSE ME TOO!

BUT, I have some good(ish) news. If we use our imagination, have a positive attitude, and just tweak our mindset a bit, we can have some pretty great “travel” experiences without having to leave our house.

Here are 27 ways to travel without leaving your house

TRY A VIRTUAL TRAVEL EXPERIENCE

  1. AIRBNB ONLINE EXPERIENCES - Airbnb Experiences are my GO TO place to look for tours, book photographers, and find unique experiences when I’m traveling. Airbnb launched its online experiences to give quarantined travelers a way to explore without leaving their homes. You can learn how to make pasta from scratch, do a guided meditation with sheep, take a workout from an olympian and so many more. Check them out here

  2. TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR OF SOME OF EUROPE’S MOST ICONIC CASTLES - Google Arts & Culture has put together a massive group of virtual tours and some of my favorites include a tour of Versailles and a look inside Buckingham Palace. Check out a full list here.

  3. WATCH ANIMAL LIVE STREAMS - Love watching animals be adorable for hours on end? Me too. With the help of webcams, zoos, aquariums, and sanctuaries are bringing you premium animal content ALL DAY LONG. Here’s a list of all the animal live streams you can tap into. I watch the giant pandas the other day, LIFE CHANGING.

  4. VISIT THE LOUVRE - If you’ve always wanted to visit the Louvre but never got the chance, you can visit virtually here!

  5. VISIT NATIONAL PARKS - If you’re craving the great outdoors you can go on a Simulated National Park Tour guided by veteran park rangers you can visit sites like Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, or Dry Turtle National Park in Florida.

  6. GET OFF THE BEATEN PATH - Looking for something off the beaten path? Why not tour the world's most beautiful abandoned places?

  7. CHECK OUT THESE WORLD HERITAGE SITES - Interested in understanding the impacts of climate change? Check out this article to see how these World Heritage Sites have changed.

TRAVEL BOOKS, TV SHOWS, AND MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS

With the help of movies, TV shows, and books, there’s some really great content out there that will mentally take you off your couch and drop you somewhere exotic. Here’s some of my favs:

TRAVEL BOOKS TO READ IN QUARANTINE

  1. In a Sunburned Country - Bill Bryson - Often regarded as one of THE most prolific travel writers of our time. Bill Bryson takes us along on his journey around Australia. It’s funny, filled with facts and makes you really wish you could visit Australia right about now.

  2. The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho - If you’re looking for a truly uplifting read, one that reminds you why it’s important to never give up, read (or re-read) The Alchemist

  3. Every Breath - Nicholas Sparks - A love story unfolds between two people from two completely different places, Zimbabwe and North Carolina. It’s sweet, romantic, and filled with just the right amount of adventure.

  4. Crazy Rich Asians - Kevin Kwan - The series that launched one of the most successful movies in recent history. There’s glamour, drama and of course LOTS of gorgeous locations.

  5. The Woman in Cabin 10 - Ruth Ware - I couldn’t put this book down!! A travel journalist gets sent on a luxury press trip to see the northern lights on a boutique cruise ship. But when one of the passengers goes missing things get a little freaky deaky

  6. Welcome to the Goddamn ice cube - Blair Braverman - You think quarantine is hard? How about being buried alive in an ice cave? YEAH… Check out Blair Braverman’s epic memoir of her adventures in Alaska and Norway.

  7. The Caliph's House: A Year in Casablanca - Tahir Shah - Love Morocco, ghost stories, and laughing? Cool, then you’ll love this hilarious true story of when Tahir Shah moved his family from the gray skies of London to the sun-drenched city of Casablanca and discovered his new house was haunted...

  8. Need more travel book reccos? Here’s 87 more.

TRAVEL TV SHOWS TO BINGE IN QUARANTINE

  1. Killing Eve - Hulu - A cat and mouse game between a very skilled assassin and an MI5 security officer takes you on around the world journey. It’s suspenseful, full of Europe’s greatest cities, and oddly funny.

  2. Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown - Hulu - The late, great travel show host Anthony Bourdain takes you to the most interesting places around the world while pulling back the curtain on destinations less traveled by the average American tourist. It’s a cult classic. And there’s 12 seasons for you to dig into.

  3. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner - Netflix - It’s got comedy, food, and famous people all wrapped into one great show. Follow host David Chang and his famous friends as they eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner in cities around the world

  4. The Night manager - AmazonPrime - Another spy series that takes you from Egpyt, Switzerland, Mallorca, and London while you watch hunky Tom Hiddleston be charming, and a total badass while he tries to bring down an international arms dealer. SWOON.

  5. Outlander - Stars - Another show with a hot male lead. This time, he’s Scottish. After serving as a British Army nurse in World War II, Claire Randall mysteriously time travels to 1743 Scottland. To survive, she marries Jamie Fraser (Mr. hottie), a strapping Scots warrior with a complicated past and a disarming sense of humor. Great adventures and romance ensue.

TRAVEL MOVIES TO WATCH IN QUARANTINE

  1. The Bucket List - Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, complete strangers, find themselves in the same hospital room. Faced with the possibility of death, and against their doctor’s orders, the two men set out on an adventure to complete the list of all the things they want to do before they die.

  2. Mamma Mia 1 & 2 - Greece, romance, dancing, singing, Meryl Streep. That’s honestly all you need to know.

  3. Under the Tuscan Sun - When Frances Mayes finds out her husband is cheating on her, her life is turned upside down. In an attempt to bring her out of a deep depression, her best friend encourages her to take a tour of Italy. During the trip, the new divorcée impulsively decides to purchase a rural Tuscan villa (totally relatable lol). She starts her life anew and meets a lot of colorful Italian characters along the way.

  4. Into the wild - Christopher McCandless, graduates from Emory University as a top student and athlete. But, instead of embarking on a prestigious career, he decides to give his savings to charity, rid himself of his possessions, and set out on a journey to the Alaskan wilderness. PS it’s a true story.

  5. Midnight in Paris - Quirky, as most Woody Allen films are, Owen Wilson and fiancee Rachel McAdams are vacationing in Paris. But Wilson likes to tour the city alone, late in the evenings. On one of these excursions, he suddenly finds himself back in time with some of the Jazz Age's icons of art and literature. The more time he spends with these cultural heroes of the past, the more dissatisfied he becomes with the present.

  6. Wild - It’s the ultimate escapist adventure movie. Driven to the edge by the loss of her mother, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) decides to halt her downward spiral and put her life back together again. With no experience, a heavy backpack and little else to go on but her own will, Cheryl sets out alone to hike the Pacific Crest Trail -- one of the country's longest and toughest through-trails.

  7. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - A group of British retirees decides to spend their remaining days of leisure in exotic and less expensive India. Lured by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel, they arrive and find that the Marigold is not at all as advertised. And while their new home is not exactly what they imagined, they find that life and love can begin again once they let go of their pasts.

  8. Crazy Rich Asians - If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting Singapore, you need to watch this movie. It’s all kinds of fabulous. Rachel Chu accompanies her boyfriend, Nick, to his best friend's wedding in Singapore. And when she arrives, she's surprised to learn that Nick's family is extremely wealthy and he's considered one of the country's most eligible bachelors. Rachel is put through the gauntlet of jealous socialites, quirky relatives and Nick's disapproving mother.

GET CREATIVE

  1. Have a vacation photoshoot at home - Just because you’re not traveling doesn’t mean you can’t get dressed up, get a little creative and snap a pic in one of the outfits you bought for the vacation you never got to take… I say make light of the situation and have a good laugh like this post here.

    1. I’ve been loving using my Rent the Runway Unlimited Subscription to snag vacation outfits for my at-home shoots. Use my code RTRALLEP for $100 off your first month.

  2. Make a signature dish from a country you love - One of my favorite ways to celebrate a country I’ve just visited once I’m back home is by cooking a traditional dish from that destination. Find a recipe on Pinterest, snag the ingredients, create some ambiance and imagine you’re enjoying your meal at a french street cafe

  3. Take a language course - If you’ve been saying for years that you’d like to speak a second language, nows the perfect time. I suggest trying out a site like Babble or Duolingo

  4. Make photo books of your old vacation photos - Do you have tons of travel photos collecting virtual dust on your phone or computer? Why not take the time to organize them and turn them into a keepsake? My favorite site for this is Artifact Uprising.

  5. Journal about your past travels - I’m so bad at remembering to do this while I’m traveling. But now might be a good time to pull out that travel journal you bought and never wrote in and jot down some fun memories. Or heck, start a blog!

TREAT YOURSELF TO SOME TRAVEL GOODIES

  1. Buy a destination inspired scented candle - Wishing you were somewhere else? SAME. Snag one of these destination-inspired scented candles and let that baby burnnnn while you dream of better days.

  2. Treat yourself to something you might need for your future travels

    • Invest in some great Away luggage to debut when we can finally travel again

    • I never travel without my Tumi backpack (PS it’s on sale)

    • A slip sleep mask is MAJOR key for flights but you can use it right now for your midday quarantine naps too

    • I love the colorful and custom travel accessories from Stoney Clover Lane I made an “Alle Abroad” Backpack and it’s BEYOND cute

  3. Try the World Subscription - One of my favorite ways to get to know a new destination is by sampling some of the best local dishes. Since we can’t travel, a great alternative is a subscription to Try the World. Each month you’re sent a selection of snacks or foods from countries around the world.

  4. Add some green to your space - Spruce up your space and bring the tropics to you by shopping for some exotic house plants on Etsy

  5. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere - Crack open a bottle of wine you brought home from your travels and treat yourself to some takeout from your favorite restaurant.

PLAN AHEAD

Planning a trip can be super time-consuming...but the one thing we have A LOT of right now is time...So even though we don’t know when we can travel again, it doesn’t hurt to do all the research and planning right now!

  1. Do your research now - Search Pinterest, Instagram and travel publications like The Telegraph Travel section, Condé Nast Traveler and Travel and Leisure for the destination you’d like to visit next. Once you’ve narrowed down where you want to go, start looking for what you’d like to see and do there

  2. Start a Pinterest Board & Instagram Saves Folder - I always create a Pinterest Board and Insta Folder for me to save anything I want to remember for future travels. This is great to have for when you’re scrolling and stumble across a great destination guide or photoshoot location.

  3. Seek professional help - If you want an expert to plan your trip and give you all the vetted recommendations, think about hiring a travel advisor. Lucky for you, Linda just so happens to be one of those. You can always contact our travel agency Scorby Travel and Cruise

  4. Start your bucket list NOW - If you’ve never started a bucket list, now might be a great time to start.
