CHECKING IN: Hotel Goldener Hirsch

If I had to imagine a place where chic Austrians would come to vacation in Salzburg, Hotel Goldener Hirsch would be it…

This luxury hotel is in the heart of Salzburg, beautifully furnished and full of historic touches that take you back in time. I was lucky enough to stay for a few nights at the hotel quite literally days after it re-opened after a two-year renovation. Let’s just say it was worth the wait...

The Hotel Goldener Hirsch’s history dates back to the 1400s but it was officially re-opened in 1948 by Countess Harriet Walderdorff. The hotel is charming, has two different restaurants to choose from as well as all the amenities you can expect from a Luxury Collection Hotel.

Hotel Goldener Hirsch:

Newly renovated (July 2019) Hotel Goldener Hirsch is a small luxury hotel with just 70 rooms. It’s ideally located in the heart of Salzburg’s old town and just steps away from Mozart’s birthplace. The hotel is decorated in traditional hunting lodge style but with all the modern amenities any 21st-century traveler could hope for.

Location:

When you walk out of the front doors of Hotel Goldener Hirsch you are right on the historic Getreidegasse road. The street was a city throughway since Roman times, but now it’s home to chic boutiques, restaurants and cafes. In 1997 the city’s Old Town was named a UNESCO World Heritage site and it completely worth exploring.

But I strongly suggest you explore other parts of the city. I LOVED this self-guided walking tour of Salzburg. Don’t be fooled by the title, it’s not just for Instagrammers lol.

Rooms:

The rooms seamlessly blend old with new and are both charming and comfortable. The rooms are definitely more of a rustic cottage style but I feel like it gets you in the mood for maybe a Sound of Music tour or wandering around the town.

My favorite thing about the hotel is that it perfectly places historic little touches in the room. For example, the little coffee tables in the sitting area are made from old shoemaker’s benches.

I will say some of the modern conveniences were even too modern for me… I had ZERO clue how to work the coffee machine LOL. But I’m sure if I called down to ask someone would have happily shown me. I just opted to grab my coffee at an amazing local cafe instead (Afro Cafe - go there, it’s a MUST!)

Because the hotel is right on the main drag, you might be worried about noise. Don’t be. The rooms have soundproof windows so that you almost forget there’s tons of tourists walking by down below.

Dining:

The restaurants here are SO CUTE and even better, the food is delicious and authentic. You have a few options when it comes to eating at the hotel:

Restaurant Goldener Hirsch

This is an Austrian favorite and the hotel’s fine dining restaurant. The restaurant combines traditional and modern Austrian cuisine and is open for both lunch and dinner.  The restaurant used to be a place where people took their horses to be shoed, now it’s a place frequented by government officials, world-class performers and international travelers alike.

Restaurant Herzl

This is the hotel’s more casual dining restaurant. It also serves Austrian cuisine and you can be 100% sure that their schnitzel it TOP NOTCH. Fun fact: the building the restaurant is in used to be a goldsmith shop in 1767. Waitresses wear dirndls and the floor to ceiling wood paneling makes you feel like you’re having a proper Austrian meal.

And once you’re finished with your meal you can head to The Bar Goldener Hirsch for a cocktail or nightcap.
