Abroad in Your Inbox Vol. 41
/HELLO FROM CIVILIZATION!!
Happy New Year and happy first Abroad in Your Inbox of 2022!! I hope you’re having a FABULOUS start to the new year and OMG, we have SO much to catch up on!! I’m in the midst of a social media detox and I just returned from the most incredible retreat in the woods (no cell service, Wi-Fi, NOTHING). When I say I feel like an entirely new human, I’m not exaggerating (more on this in a second).
But since I took my break from this newsletter to enjoy the holidays with my family, I’ve gotta admit, I’ve missed our weekly chats here on Abroad in Your Inbox!
Speaking of which, it’s been one whole year since I started this weekly newsletter (woahhh) & I would LOVE to hear what you think of Abroad in Your Inbox. Is it helpful, is there a better time to send you emails, is there something you’d like to see in here that I’m not sharing, etc. This is your chance to help me make this newsletter even more beneficial to YOU!

OKAY…back to this whole getaway in the woods…
IDK how you feel about this time of year, but I LOVE the feeling of a fresh start, setting intentions, and planning the new year. But after the INSANITY of 2021 and the race to the finish line that was December 2021, I knew I needed to make myself COMPLETELY unavailable for a hot second, to breathe, reflect, re-charge, and intention set for 2022.
Enter, Getaway House.
They’re these tiny, minimalist cabins located 2 hours from various major cities in the US, created for the sole purpose of giving you a retreat to escape, disconnect and recharge. I’ve wanted to try these after I saw my gal pal Glo Atanmo do her own version of this retreat in 2020. And let me tell you, this was one of the best gifts I could have given myself and my business in 2022.
I’ll be putting a full video review together over on my YouTube next Sunday with my thoughts, what I brought, etc. so that if you’re considering doing something similar (HIGHLY recommend) you’ll feel totally prepared.
Until then, if you’re like, I’m ready I need this now, I’ve got a code that takes $25 off your first stay - (I found their mid-week rates totally reasonable) and I’d suggest staying a minimum of 2 nights, although I think when I do this again I’ll book 3 because I could have used that extra day.
Outside of that, I’m just excited for all the exciting things 2022 has in store. I’m spending this upcoming week mapping out my travel and work schedule for 2022, creating some biz plans and goals and just soaking up the last moments of peace before I dive back into social media :)
I know this was an aggressively long intro but, I’ve missed ya and you know me…I’ve got a lot to say (I get it from Linda lol).

How Women Are Spending on Travel Right Now - a fun fact I learned from this article, we travel more often than our male counterparts, accounting for 56 percent of leisure travelers (YOU GO GIRLS!)

What’s Your Word of the Year? This article goes into the value of this word exercise and how it can help you focus on the things that are most meaningful to you and the positive changes you’d like to make in your life, no matter what 2022 has in store.
CURRENTLY OBSESSING OVER
BOOK(S) OF THE WEEK: One of my intentions for 2022 is to read/listen to one book a week. And since my time away from social I’ve magically had a lot more free time so I’ve been devouring LOTS of fabulous books. Here’s what I’ve been reading:
The Obstacle is the Way: I discovered Ryan Holiday through the Skinny Confidential Podcast and this book is the NUMBER ONE book I’ve been recommending to well, literally all the important people in my life. I love how he draws on the learnings of the stoics and uses some of the most well-known leaders, business owners, icons in history to talk about how to turn troubles into triumphs.
Stillness is the Key: Since finishing The Obstacle is the Way, I decided to get my hands on the boxed set of Holiday’s most popular books which includes: Stillness is the Key. This is the book that I read while on my Getaway and it couldn’t have been more perfect for that moment. It’s all about how vital cultivating stillness is and how we can cultivate it in our own lives today.
Essentialism: If you’ve ever felt overcommitted, stretched too thin, or find yourself being busy but not actually getting anything done, you need to read this book.
SETTING INTENTIONS: I made a point to be VERY specific when creating my vision board for 2021 and when looking at it before the end of last year I was blown away by how many things had actually come to be. If you’re still in need of creating this year’s vision board, watch this reel that walks you through my exact process. I also really loved this On Purpose Podcast Episode that breaks down 7 ways to manifest results in 2022.
WHAT TO WATCH RIGHT NOW:
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts HBO Max (I cried within the first 7 min)
The new season of Emily in Paris. Is it basic? Yes. Is it still fabulous and worth the mental check out and beautiful French locations? 1,000%. PS - here’s the quaint and colorful town the producers selected as their South of France filming location.
IN THE NEWS
Breaking news: I was quoted in the New York Times and they mentioned Gals Abroad Getaways!!! Click here to read the article.
Eeeekkk, whether you’ve been following along for years, or maybe this article is the reason you find yourself here now, I just have to say thank you for your constant support. 2021 was one of the most incredible years of my travel career and after the extreme lows of 2020, I’m just beyond grateful to see the return of travel (no matter how bumpy & complicated it may be).
While the quote was small, this was a HUGE win for me, especially as a journalist, and because I believe the New York Times to be one of THE most important journalism institutions we have to this date.
PRO-TIP: Get a travel credit card
I’ve been chatting with the gals joining our France trip and some of them are in the market for new travel credit cards and I’ve been pointing them to this Points Guy article. It’s a thorough breakdown of the best travel credit cards and what you get with each.
I personally use and LOVE the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card because I get 3x the points on travel & dining and a $300 travel credit every year. If you want to avoid foreign transaction fees while traveling abroad and you’re responsible about paying your card off, looking into a travel credit card is a super smart move.
HAPPY ENDING
