Abroad in Your Inbox Vol. 63

THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE

I don’t think I say this enough. I’m finishing reading Gabrielle Bernstein’s book: Super Attractor: Methods for Manifesting a Life beyond Your Wildest Dreams and one of my biggest takeaways is how important it is to express appreciation for all aspects of your life (in good times and bad). For almost 3 years now I’ve had a habit of starting my day by writing 3 things I’m grateful for. But I want to make a habit of telling the most important people in my life how grateful I am for them - and that includes this community aka YOU!

I think back to where I was at the top of 2018 - crying as I drove to work at my TV station, listening to the Greatest Showman Soundtrack (nerdy I know, but true) to hype me up & counting down the days until I could finish out my contract and finally be FREE. That version of Alle honestly had no concept of the version of myself that is sitting here typing this email.

Four years doesn’t seem that long when you write it but it feels like a lifetime and I feel like I am a completely new human.

Here’s where you come in. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for this amazing community. You’ve embraced my quirkiness, cheered me on through the wins, commiserated through the tough times, spoke up during moments when it mattered, and trust me when I recommend a destination, experience, travel tip, or heck… even an Amazon workout top (seriously this top is the greatest thing ever lol).

Through this community, some of the most incredible opportunities have presented themself to me & ultimately through Alle Abroad & Gals Abroad Getaways, I’ve been able to create my dream career and life.

I want you to know that I NEVER take for granted your trust, respect and faith in me and it is something I cherish deeply.

  • Thank you for allowing me to jump into your inbox every Sunday through this newsletter.

  • Thank you for taking the time to respond to these emails to connect, share feedback or even just talk about our love for cats & Rent the Runway (you know who you are haha)

  • Thank you for sharing your love and encouragement on social media.

  • Thank you for getting excited for me when I launched Gals Abroad Getaways & to those of you who have joined us on one of our inaugural trips.

  • And thank you for ALL the ways your support my business whether that’s referring friends to work with Linda, reading my blog posts or watching my destination guide videos, shopping my live sales or simply liking a photo on Instagram.

When it comes to running your own business no amount of support is too small and I’m SO incredibly grateful for your love.

I’ve got some really exciting announcements to share in the coming weeks, but for now, keep scrolling for a few things I’m loving right now.

WHAT’S NEW IN MY WORLD

I have a new lash obsession…

You guys know I swear by my Ardell Double Up Strip Lashes (and I still stand by them) but honestly…during the week and when I’m traveling I don’t need a BAM POW lash like these but I do want a little something something for when I run errands or are just working at home.

My girl Ashley from Everyday Pursuits recently shared her lash secrets on her IG - ENTER LASHIFY - the world’s first and only DIY lash extension system.

Think of these as the happy middle between crazy expensive and damaging lash extensions & strip lashes. I just applied my first pair today and I can’t stop talking about them. Take the quiz & use my code if you’re looking to break up with strips or extensions too!

Tipsy Travel Tips Vol. 3

The series is heating up and this week I shared a classic New Orleans Cocktail + my tip for how I plan ALL my trips!

The idea for my Tipsy Travel Tips series was inspired by one of my favorite books “Around the World in 80 Cocktails” and each week you will get to vote on the cocktail I’ll make.

The videos drop Thursday evenings, just in time for the weekend. And if you want to see our past two cocktails & get my travel tips Click here for Volume 1 & here for Volume 2.

Oh and I just got this SUPER cute gold bar set (have been needing to step up my game) & these dreamy vintage art deco coupe glasses. I can’t wait to try these this week!

Closet Sale Vol. 2

You guys loved last Sunday’s closet sale so I figured we’d do it again! I shared all my remaining summer pieces on stories Saturday but saved what’s left (a lot) into my IG closet sale highlight. Have a look and snatch up some amazing summer pieces (I’ve got some lululemon workout items, accessories, & gorg dresses that have really only been worn once or twice.)

Shipping is included in the price (if you’re shopping from the USA) and I’ve got all the rules saved in the highlight. Head to my IG now & check out what’s up for grabs!

IN TRAVEL

  1. Is it Really Possible to Travel Like a Local? - Do you travel like a local? It’s a question I asked in stories this week and MANY of the people who responded said yet. This podcast challenges that idea and if that should even be something that we strive for as travelers or if there’s a different way to look at the idea of “traveling like a local”

  2. For passengers who use wheelchairs, air travel in the United States can be an embarrassing, uncomfortable and perilous prospect. - This article was incredibly hard to read for the simple fact that it made me acutely aware of how much I take for granted. That said, I think that we as travelers and the industry have SO much work to do in terms of making travel more accessible and the airline industry has to be held accountable when they damage these chairs. Please take the time to read this and sit with the emotions that may arise & then follow my friend Cory to see how a wheelchair-using travel lover is living his best life.

  3. Two airport restrooms in the running to take the throne of America’s Best Restroom - this really made me laugh but I gotta say the honorable mention is my personal fav.

  2. This simple silicone case keeps my makeup brushes from making everything dirty in my makeup bag when I travel

  3. My new vintage art deco coupe glasses which come in the most beautiful case - would be a fabulous housewarming gift.

  4. This sunscreen with just a little bit of tint

THIS ONE GOES OUT TO ALL THE SHOPPERS

Hey you, honestly, don’t have a whole lot of exciting updates for you this week when it comes to my personal OR my travel life haha. I’ve been keeping my head down, working like a maniac while I’m home, and indulging in a bit of online shopping, because I have a problem haha (the first step is admitting it…).

But let me let you in on the BEST new online shopping discovery I have made.

I had a little sleepover at my gal pal Lexi’s house Friday night and Saturday morning we walked for coffee and to the lake but I, of course, packed ZERO sensible walking gear for when Chicago is 95 degrees and feels like the inside of Satan’s butthole.

So Lexi let me borrow some of her cute workout pieces, which I was convinced were from Lululemon or somewhere else expensive… NOPE they’re from Amazon and under $30…Of course, I immediately ran home and ordered all the sets she recommended and now I’m sharing the secret with you!

I’ve linked all the ones I love on my Amazon Fashion storefront! I bought this ribbed set in lavender and then stocked up on these basic tops & threw in these shorts because they were so comfy.

Aside from my enthralling Amazon shopping adventures, I’m hosting for the first time ever, an Instagram Stories Closet sale for 24 hours only. You can find all the details below & I promise that next weekend I’ll have something more exciting to share lol!!

IF YOU’RE NEW HERE, HEY!!! Instagram Story Closet Sale TODAY

It’s been a minute since I’ve done a closet sale and ever since my gal pal Britt with At One Boutique moved to NYC I’ve been trying to figure out how to do these sales without her (😭). So today I’m trying an IG story sale - pieces will be up for 24 hours with price, sizing & details.

Shipping is included in the price (if you’re shopping from the USA) and I’ve got all the rules up on my IG stories. Head to my IG now & peep my stories to check out what’s up for grabs!

Where should the Gals go next?!

I know I’ve been teasing this for a while but we are going to be finalizing our Gals Abroad Getaways destinations for 2023-2025 in the coming months. I have created a brand new survey for anyone interested in joining us on a Gals Abroad Getaways trip & that survey will be going out exclusively to my Gals Abroad Getaways newsletter tomorrow evening.

If you want to have a say in where we go, make sure you’re on the list & check your inbox tomorrow evening.

Tipsy Travel Tips

I’ve been in a creative rut lately and for a while now I’ve had this idea to create a fun, shortform video series where I create a cocktail and share a travel tip - enter my new Tipsy Travel Tips Instagram Reels series.

The idea was inspired by one of my favorite books “Around the World in 80 Cocktails” (this is the best housewarming gift) and each week you will get to vote on the cocktail I’ll make.

The videos drop Thursday evenings, just in time for the weekend. And if you want to see our past two cocktails & get my travel tips Click here for Volume 1 & here for Volume 2.

I’m thinking of putting all the tips that I share at the end of the videos into an E-book but one step at a time lol.

FOR THE CRAZY CAT PARENTS

Linda has had this on virtually every TV in the house this weekend and the cats are in heaven. There’s a number of different playlists here that you can select from but the cats seem to like this video best haha.

MUSIC FESTIVALS HIT DIFFERENT WHEN YOU’RE 30 LOL

Friend, if you ever doubted that I was committed to this Sunday newsletter, think again. As I write this I am currently the conductor of the hangover train and quite literally on a train from Chicago back to the burbs after attending 2 days of Lollapalooza (a music festival that takes place every summer in Chicago). My head is throbbing, my feet are full of blisters and I’m wondering why I thought it was a good idea to eat Taco Bell at 1 a.m.

ANYWAYS, I do have a point to make…

I’m going to say something controversial and I hope you don’t lose all respect for me… I’m not a huge concert person……I know that sounds weird but concerts usually involve things that I’m not too fond of like: standing for long periods of time, being smooshed in crowds, loud music (duh) & waiting (you know when the artist is typically fashionably late…)

My two exceptions to this rule are festivals & Beyonce concerts. I love a music festival. And here’s why it’s my exception. Music festivals bring in the element of crazy fashion, art, and other things to keep me occupied rather than simply waiting for the singer to show up on stage. Plus when I get bored I can easily walk away to watch someone else.

This is why when my gal pal gifted me with some extra wristbands to Lolla I was GAME. But my goodness, going to this festival in particular at 30 was a new kind of experience. Takeaways below.

Here’s what I loved about this weekend at Lolla:

  • Spontaneously deciding to attend this festival with my best gal pals

  • Seeing Bob’s Dance Shop BOTH days and dancing my booty off (follow them on IG they’re iconic)

  • Having Rare Bird Beauties to help us get festival ready

  • Randomly bumping into some of my favorite humans

  • All the brand activations that were creatively put together

  • The $60 Lolla carafe of rose that fits an entire bottle of wine in it

  • Matching with my bestie Lexi & 100% not knowing we ordered the same outfit and then owning it

  • All the college dudes that hit on me until I said I wasn’t interested cause I was 30 - LOL

  • Being in the VIP section to see Kygo perform so I didn’t have to be smooshed in the crowds haha

Here’s what I didn’t love about the weekend at Lolla:

  • The $12 walking taco that gave me severe heartburn so much so that I had to leave early and miss Dua Lipa (who I was most excited to see)

  • The giant blisters I got on the bottoms of my feet from making a rookie mistake and wearing new shoes

  • Getting told by the Tito’s brand rep that I wasn’t allowed to sit on one of their cocktail “tables” that looked more like an orange stump of metal because it cost them $40,000 to make each one (who made that genius decision)

  • Also the $60 carafe of rose wine that fits an entire bottle of wine in it cause I blame that wine for making me feel like poop today

  • Waiting 45 min for a “surprise” performance by one of the headliners at Soho House only to see Big Sean walk around on stage and then announce he will be spending the evening with his dad lol.

Overall, it was an incredible experience and I’m always the person who says HELL YES to new experiences, at any age. It’s just kind of wild to me to think of all the energy I had at 21 and now only 9 years later I’d be leaving early because I had bad heartburn and secretly being so happy to be in bed at 10:30 in comfy clothes.

Do I sound like a grumpy 75 year old in a 30 year old’s body or what?!?! hahaha. Thanks for listening to my ramblings. Here’s some fun photos from the weekend.

WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING?

It’s a question I ask myself often and usually, it’s a question that gets asked in between a period of extreme busyness and right before a period of stillness (self-awareness is a key strength of mine).

Which is how I find myself in this moment where I am home for exactly 1 month before I kick into high gear again and I am currently in the midst of a self-doubt death spiral - have you ever been there?! I think this is something that acutely impacts creatives, entrepreneurs or anyone who is an Enneagram Type 3 (where my overachievers at?!)

When I find myself in one of these “I have no idea what I’m doing”, “who am I to have these big dreams” loops, there are a few things that help pull me out (just in case you ever find yourself in a similar situation).

  1. I allow myself no more than 24 hours of wallowing, feeling all the feels, staying in bed watching Gilmore Girls on repeat (this is my version of self-care)

  2. I get back into my daily routine which is usually impossible to maintain on the road. I meditate, gratitude journal, workout and write out all the things I need to get done that day

  3. Last but not least, I pull up a google doc where I’ve written down my big WHY. In it, I’ve written down the reason I started my businesses and my ultimate goal to remind me of why I should keep going. If you’re interested in what my WHY is, check out my latest Instagram post - I shared it there.

I hope that by sharing these honest and raw feelings outside of just the usual IG highlight reel it might be relatable to anyone who has or is feeling the same way.

HELLO FROM THE FINAL DAY OF THE WORLD GAMES

I’m writing this just before heading to the closing ceremonies with my team and I have to say I am thoroughly blown away by this experience of working at The World Games. This was by far one of the most interesting, unique and fun events I’ve worked and I honestly cannot believe some of the things I had a front-row seat for.

From 4 men stacking themselves on top of one another, with the dude on top balancing with one arm on someone’s head (I’m not joking check my Instagram) to these fabulously fierce dancers bringing the fire and sequins to the dance floor.

I feel immensely proud to be part of the team that helped bring these games to life and is made up of some of the most insanely talented humans from all over the world. These are the same people that work the Super Bowl, put on the Olympics and of course, many of them are my buddies from the BNP Paribas Open.

Working massive events like these are LONG days and high stakes, but I gotta say at the end of the day it feels like I’m working with my family. Everyone is cheering each other on, solving problems and helping out no matter how big or small the task.

This was my first time working an event like this as an arena host and I gotta be honest I was nervous coming here.

But after 2 weeks, man…I feel like I could do this again and again. Constantly grateful and humbled by these experiences and looking forward to a few more in the near future ;)

Okay, BRB gotta guzzle some wine before going to watch Lionel Richie close out the games!

  2. MY FAVORITE TRAVEL SANDALS ARE ON SALE - I swear by these sandals, it feels like I’m walking on clouds when I’m wearing them. They’ve been the only thing I’ve been wearing while I work 12-hour days hosting the World Games. They are tried and true and will be PERFECT for travel or long days on your feet. Oh and they’re permanently on sale.

  3. SOME OF THE TRAVEL DEALS I’M SHOPPING DURING THE NORDSTROM SALE - While I don’t lose my damn mind like many of my colleagues do over the Nordy sale (lolz watch this comedic video for context) I did find some great travel staples you might want to check out.

TRAVELING THIS WEEKEND OR THIS SUMMER?!

I’m sure you’ve seen the headlines… airports are a total shitshow right now (sorry there’s really no other way to say it). Suitcases lost, connections missed, canceled flights, lines upon lines upon lines, the list goes on and on. And as someone whose livelihood is pretty intertwined with the success of the travel industry, it pains me to share news like this. But travel is back with a vengeance this summer and if you’re getting back out there, I want you to feel as prepared as possible.

So I’m dedicating this newsletter to all the best summer travel tips (just keep reading😉)

And this is all pretty timely because very soon, I’m going to be one of the 48 million Americans (yeah you read that right) traveling this holiday weekend.

I’m headed to Birmingham Alabama tomorrow to join the thousands of athletes, sports fans, and families who will all descend on the city for the World Games which takes place every four years and is basically the equivalent to the Olympic Games for sports that are not currently included in the Olympic program. Think sports like drone flying, ballroom dancing, and parkour (yes, that parkour🤪).

I’ll be the host in the Legacy area for both Dancesport & Gymnastics, which means I’m in charge of making sure everyone is having a grand ole time - my favorite job everrrr (read: Chief Fun Officer)

I’m sharing all of this because I’m flying out early in the morning on the 4th of July and I’m truly SO interested to see if the airport will be DEAD or crazy town. TBH I kind of love flying on holidays because the airports tend to be significantly less busy but this year, all bets are off…

I’ll be taking bets on airport business on stories and will be sharing some little tips and tricks I have for making the airport experience as stress free as possible so make sure you’re following me over on Instagram tomorrow.

If you’re traveling anytime soon, I’m sending ALL the good vibes your way and hoping that your travels are as smooth as silk! Keep scrolling for solid summer travel tips.

Heading to the airport this summer?

I’ve rounded up my best travel tips that will help you survive the airport and get to where you need to go with as little stress as possible.

  1. CURRENTLY READING - Lots of people think this best-selling book is controversial but I gotta say if you want to understand the power dynamics that rule our world (whether we like them or not) and use them to your advantage in basically any aspect of life - read this book.

  2. CURRENTLY WATCHING - Chelsea Does on Netflix - I’ve been really into comedy on Netflix lately. It’s something I like to have on in the background when I’m working or getting ready because it doesn’t require you to watch all that much. And up until literally 5 minutes ago I thought this was a new Netflix show (nope it’s from 2016 lol). So clearly the Netflix algorithm is serving me what I want but if you’re looking for a laugh I’m through episodes 1 and 2 and it’s making me giggle.

  3. MY FAVORITE PLACE TO BUY TRAVEL DAY LOUNGE SETS - I’ll admit that I bought way too many cute lounge sets during the pandemic…but now these sets have become my go-to travel day looks so really it was a win win. So many of you have asked where I buy travel looks and I’ll be honest a majority of them come from this amazing women-owned boutique in Chicago. You gotta check them out and all their items are under $100.

  4. THESE STAPLE SUMMER HEELS - I am saying goodbye to any and all uncomfortable heels I own - no thank you haha and hello to chunky heels. They are from my favorite store in the world and they are under $35.

HAPPY ENDING (ish) or just current mood

Does anyone else relate to me on this one?? Kinda feel like I’m gonna sit this one out - for a while honestly…

I’M ANGRY AND READY TO GET LOUD

Let’s just get this out of the way, this will not be a normal newsletter.

TLDR (too long didn’t read): Alle Abroad & Gals Abroad Getaways stand in support of a woman’s right to reproductive rights and the freedom to choose what she does with her body. Help us get loud, take action and support the women who need resources right now by donating to the National Network of Abortion Funds. CLICK HERE TO DONATE. My goal is to raise $2,500 in the next 30 days.

(In order to donate you must be using the Instagram app on your phone and not via a desktop browser - if you go to my IG profile you can’t miss the fundraiser button.)

THE LONG VERSION & MY PURPOSE:

When I started Alle Abroad in 2018, my goal was simply to share my colorful travels around the world with Linda, connect with other travel lovers, and hopefully make the travel planning process easier, stress-free and more approachable for my community.

And while that initial goal still informs the content I create to this day, I feel like my brand and the platform I’ve been privileged to build has grown beyond just speaking about travel.

Over on Instagram, I’ve connected with so many of you about your decision to not have children. Your thoughts about quitting your job and launching your own business. And most importantly of all, our mutual desire to live in a country that respects the basic rights of EVERY human being who lives here.

If you’re new here (which many of you are), 2020 was the year that I found my voice and leveraged this platform I’ve built to not only talk about travel but also speak out against the injustices taking place in our country.

I think that 2020 was the year that forced many of us to stare the ugliness of America - that so many of us have blissfully ignored - straight in the eye and make a choice: speak up or go silent.

For me, silence was never an option.

From sharing voting resources and volunteering with the Democrats during the 2020 election to learning how to be a better Ally after George Floyd was murdered and all the growth moments in between - I made a conscious choice that I was going to use my platform as a place to share resources with those willing to listen, learn and grow.

HERE’S WHY I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR ME TO SPEAK UP:

I want Alle Abroad to be a safe space for self-identifying women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, to BIPOC, to fellow Allies. I want someone who lands on my website or social media platforms to know where I stand when it comes to supporting and advocating for their basic human rights.

For so long as a TV news reporter I was unable to share my opinions or thoughts on topics that were important to me.

NO LONGER.

I now have the privilege of being my own boss and have made the decision that what is best for my business is to take a stance and share it with the world.

The people, brands, and organizations who get it will work with me.

Those who don’t, well do I really want to work with them anyways??

I may not always get it right, and I might not speak on every issue, but I’d rather make an intentional effort than do nothing at all.

It is a privilege to have this platform and speaking up for what I believe in is by far the most important thing I can do in this space.

NEXT STEPS & HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED IN THE FIGHT:

I know these last few days have felt incredibly heavy and you might feel the urge to turn it all off, crawl in a hole and ignore what’s going on. And while I think our mental health during times like these is incredibly important to protect, I also urge you to make sure that you educate yourself on what’s taking place because the harsh truth of the matter is that this is just the beginning…

One of the best ways that I stay informed is via trusted, vetted news sources in the form of podcasts. To each their own but let me share some that have been helpful to me at the moment.

Here’s some podcasts that I’ve recently listened to that have helped me understand what’s happening:

  1. THE BASICS: The New York Times “The Daily” did a special episode immediately after Roe was overturned. If you’re looking for the straight facts, start here.

  2. THE NITTY-GRITTY DETAILS - if you want to hear from lawyers about the intricacies of what happened on Friday, listen to Strict Scrutiny which is a podcast hosted by three women that talks about the United States Supreme Court and the legal culture that surrounds it.

  3. WHY YOU NEED TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO WHAT’S GOING ON: Fresh Air dives deep into where the anti-abortion movement is heading and what can happen next. This is probably the most important listen of all.

After that, make an action plan:

HERE ARE 6 WAYS YOU CAN STAND UP IN THE FIGHT FOR REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS (and they’re pretty simple)

YOU CAN ALSO CHECK OUT POD SAVE AMERICA’S F@CK BANS ACTION PLAN FOR MORE WAYS TO SUPPORT.

After that, prioritize your mental health and set boundaries

During the 2020 election, I was CONSUMED by the news coverage and I guarantee that did not help my mental health.

I’ve since learned to set boundaries for how much I consume and here are some bits of advice (ps I’m not an expert this is just what has worked for me):

  1. Lean on your support network. In the past few days, I’ve spent time with family and friends and have taken breaks from my constant consumption of social media and the news. It’s too much to live in this mess 24/7.

  2. Set time limits on social media consumption, news, etc.

  3. Move your body - I know, I know, I know…but seriously I find that when I’m angry, frustrated and feeling helpless the best thing I can do is channel that energy into a good workout. I can’t tell you how much it helps.

  4. Don’t ignore how you’re feeling. Journal, cry, feel it all and if you need someone to talk to my DMs and email inbox is a safe space. But if you feel like you might need to seek the support of a professional, do so.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I know that you didn’t originally come here for my thoughts on politics or reproductive rights. BUT in this day and age and this political climate where everything is so incredibly intermixed (for better or worse), it would be irresponsible for me not to use the platform I built to educate and share resources on something I feel incredibly strongly about.

I HATE WHEN PEOPLE TELL CREATORS/ACTORS/ARTISTS/ATHLETES/BUSINESS OWNERS ETC NOT TO SHARE THEIR POLITICAL VIEWS.

I think that is so narrow-minded to think of anyone with a platform or business is a one-trick pony simply there to entertain vs a multifaceted human being with thoughts, emotions and feelings & the ability to enact true change if they use their voice for good.

I hope that if you’ve made it allllllll the way down here (lol) that you can respect my decision to speak up (whether you agree with it or not) and understand that this is the choice that I believe is best for me & my business.

And to those of you who have donated, shared and supported thus far, thank you. This community and this country needs you and we are just getting started.

But for now, I’m going to disconnect and get ready to start the week refreshed and ready to fight.

xx Allecat

LONG TIME NO TALK MY FRIEND, I MISSED YOU!

So, a lot has happened since the last time we chatted. I’ve hosted my inaugural Gals Abroad Getaways trip to Paris and the Loire Valley, bopped around the South of France with Linda, returned home and am getting ready to head back on the road in a few short weeks to host the Dance Sport & Gymnastics competitions at the World Games in Alabama next month (say a prayer that it won’t be 10,000 degrees while I’m there haha).

Needless to say, my busy season is in FULL swing (why I’ve ghosted you for the last month) and travel is back with a vengeance! I have NEVER had more people reaching out asking for mine and Linda’s help to plan trips, honeymoons or even ask for some travel advice.

And while I might be slamming espressos and Celsius caffeine drinks more often than normal (lol) this sharp contrast to summer 2020 has me feeling INCREDIBLY grateful to be this booked and busy. It’s not lost on me that just two years ago I was sitting at home learning TikTok dances because all of my work and travel had been CANCELED (still trying to learn the art of TikTok though haha).

I promised myself during the height of the pandemic that when I’m able to travel and do my job again I would NEVER take it for granted and that sentiment was something that was ever present on my mind while we were traveling around France.

Speaking of, I have LOTS of France content left to share so just a heads up that that’s coming your way to an Instagram page (mine) near you lol.

Until then, I’m so glad to be back, and let’s dive back into Abroad in your Inbox!

IF YOU’RE NEW HERE, HEY!!! Abroad in Your Inbox is a weekly collection of news articles, blog posts, products, podcasts, videos & anything else that’s on the interwebs that will help you navigate this new era of travel, reignite your wanderlust, help you plan a future trip & hopefully leave you with a little smile.

GALS ABROAD GETAWAYS

As I mentioned above, Linda and I have returned from our very first successful Gals Abroad Getaways adventure to France. And while it feels impossible to sum up these 10 fabulous days with this incredible group of women, I’m going to attempt to do so starting tomorrow over on the Gals Abroad Getaways Instagram page (give it a follow if you haven’t already).

It’s still surreal to me that this idea I had many years ago to help travel-loving women see the world in ways that Linda and I have been so fortunate to experience over the years has finally come to fruition. Starting a new business alongside my mom and planning these incredible adventures for truly amazing women is a literal dream come true.

I know there’s many of you who are eager to know where we’re going next and when you can sign up. While we won’t be announcing any more trips for 2022, Linda and I are already in the process of planning 3, possibly 4 trips for 2023.

And the very best place to learn about those trips when they launch will be on the Gals Abroad Getaways newsletter - click here to make sure you’re on the list.

AND JUST LIKE THAT, I’M OFF TO FRANCE

As I write this week’s Abroad in Your Inbox, I’m sitting next to Linda in the United lounge (worth the splurge), nursing a glass of red wine and overcome with a sense of deep gratitude. We are about to set off on a 3 week trip to France where we will first escort our inaugural Gals Abroad Getaways group to Paris & the Loire Valley and finish with a research trip to the South of France.

Everything about this moment feels surreal. Linda and I have spent MONTHS preparing for this trip, planning each and every detail meticulously that now that the moment is here, I honestly can’t believe it’s actually happening.

For those who might be new here, I launched Gals Abroad Getaways in November 2021. It’s always been a dream of mine to help other women see and travel the world in the way Linda and I have been so fortunate to do over the past several years.

I like to say that these trips are for luxury-loving, independent, self-identifying women who are tired of waiting for their friends/partner/family in order to travel the world on their own terms.

Building this business alongside Linda has been by far one of the most rewarding (and at times challenging) experiences of my life. But hearing just how many of you are SO eager to join us on one of our adventures is truly the reason I do any of this.

Each and every one of the women joining us on this trip have been such a joy to work with and I just can’t wait to see how this community and business grows in the coming years. This is just the beginning and OMG do we have some new and exciting things planned, just you wait.

I have SOOOOO much more to share and if you’d like to follow us on our adventures, please make sure you’re following both @allepierce & @galsabroadgetaways on IG to keep up with all that we’re doing in Paris & the Loire Valley. If you want a little preview of what we’ll be getting up to in France - CLICK HERE.

And if you want to know about future Gals Abroad Getaways group trips - make sure you’re signed up to receive my Gals Abroad Getaways emails (it’s a separate newsletter than Abroad in Your Inbox)

PS - Linda and I are spending an entire week exploring the South of France (a new Gals Abroad Getaways destination perhaps?!) and this article on the best Airbnbs in the South of France really spoke to my soul.

This is truly a monumental moment for your girl because I have been known to drop MAJOR dollars on pre-vacay prep. Instead of buying new things, I shopped my own closet and leaned into Rent the Runway and Nuuly for some really fun French pieces for this trip. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES…

Isn’t funny how time seems to make everything better? Whether it’s getting over a breakup, mourning a loss or transitioning into a new stage of life, as cliche as it sounds - time seems to be cure-all. After the roller coaster of emotions last week with Myko’s unexpected health scare I have to say that I’m feeling much more hopeful. And while we still don’t have all the answers we need (hopefully some of those tomorrow), she seems to be doing SIGNIFICANTLY better which makes me incredibly relieved as Linda and I are leaving for France to host our inaugural Gals Abroad Getaways trip.

I’ve spent the majority of this week prepping some last min things for our trip to France & hopping on get to know you calls with our brand new group of Gals joining us in Greece this October. I gotta say I’m still pinching myself that I get to help all these amazing women see some of mine and Linda’s favorite places in the world.

If you’re not already, make sure you’re following our Gals Abroad Getaways IG page to keep up with our adventures in Paris and the Loire Valley over the next few weeks. Especially if you’re considering joining us on a future Gals Abroad Getaways trip - this will give you a sneak peek of what you can expect from your trip!

Oh and one more thing - I’ve seen a few new emails around these parts - hiiiiiiii - and I just wanted to let you know that if you’re wanting to learn about upcoming Gals Abroad Getaways trips - make sure that you’re signed up for those emails - you can do that right here.

  1. THE SECRET FARM RIO SALE I JUST DISCOVERED - I was browsing the Refinery 29 site and saw a post on how it is offering 20% off sitewide at Farm Rio with the promo code READERS20 from now through May 20. The best part - it appears to work on already discounted items too!!

  2. A SOMBER REMINDER - On Friday one of my favorite podcasts released an episode marking the sobering milestone - the number of known deaths from Covid-19 in the United States is expected to reach one million. They asked listeners to share memories about loved ones they have lost — and about what it’s like to grieve when it seems like the rest of the world is trying to move on. I found it incredibly moving & a reminder to never forget how devastating this pandemic has been for so many of us.

  3. ALL THE IMMUNE SUPPORT - I am not messing around when it comes to COVID right now. I feel like everyone I know is popping positive and I cannot take any chances. SO I’ve busted out one of my old, tried and true pills that I used to take all the time pre-pandemic to boost my immunity before I got on a plane. I take 1-2 of these every day in the days (weeks in my case right now) before a flight. I’m no doctor but I’ve been taking them for years and THEY WORK.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GRACE…

This Mother’s Day feels a little off this year for both me and Linda. I’m sure if you follow me on IG you’ve seen that we just got some pretty devastating news about my kitty Mykonos very unexpectedly a few days ago. We’ve spent the weekend trying to not jump to conclusions before we know for sure what’s going on but this entire situation has been incredibly difficult and if I’m being honest, I can’t muster up the strength to really do much aside from go through the motions right now.

It’s really wild how life throws you curve balls when you’re riding high…I’ve been sharing what’s going on over on IG mainly as an attempt to process but also because I adore this community and the amount of support we’ve received has been truly incredible and I can’t tell you how much it means to me.

I hope that if you have fur babies, you give them an extra squeeze for me. Never take them for granted. I assumed I’d have SO much more time with Myko and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that’s still the case after we get results on Monday.

Any good vibes or positive bits of energy are all VERY much appreciated.

And a very happy Mother’s Day to all the human and fur baby Moms out there. Big hugs.

  1. ALL THE NEW SHOES - I’ve been on a shoe kick lately - I guess freshening up my options for summer and whatnot. So I figured I’d share some of my favs (one pair is under $30!)

    1. I saw these lilac driving shoes on my mom’s biz partner Nancy a few nights ago and fell in love. I’ve heard amazing things about this brand and I think they would make for the perfect travel shoe!

    2. I’m a sucker for a colorful gym shoe and I kinda think these might be cute paired with a summer white dress maybe?! Or jeans and a white tee!

    3. I’m really into the espadrille sandal look right now - again paired with a feminine dress and these would be the PERFECT summer travel sandal and OMG they are so comfy!

    4. I fell in love with this designer’s slippers during the pandemic and found out they also make the cutest shoes! I snagged these pink espadrilles (come in a bunch of colors) and these white slip-on Gucci dupes (currently on sale). Both perfect summer shoes (can you tell I’m so ready for summer??)

    5. I’m currently in the process of retiring all my spike heels (this is 30 am I right?!?!) and I needed a new pair of nude heels - these are so comfy and under $30!

Let me explain:

On Friday I’m speaking at TravelCon, teaching about how to become Fearless on Camera - Click here to snag a digital ticket if you can’t make it to TravelCon 2022!

Anyways, in my talk one of the stats I share is that the mere mention of the word “video” in an email subject line increases email open rates by 19% - and I wanted to see if that was true for this newsletter lol. Only time will tell haha.

And now you’re probably wondering, what’s the video haha. Don’t worry, I’ll link it below. It’s a fun little recap of my Desert Disco 30th shot by my incredible friend Stefan Colson. He’s the amazing human who shot mine and Linda’s TV show pilot - updates on that show soon-ish ;).

And the best news of all, the Poppy website is LIVE

Poppy is the amazing Greater Palm Springs luxury vacation rental company that manages The Pond Estate and 130+ properties all across the Coachella Valley. Their range of properties is truly incredible and if you’re planning a trip to Palm Springs anytime soon, you’ve gotta check out their roster!

SPLURGE WORTHY SUNGLASSES - normally I’m not one to splurge on expensive sunglasses because, well, I don’t trust myself. But seeing as I’ve newly graduated to full-blown adulthood, I thought I’d test my ability to have nice things and not ruin them. If you’re in the market for some fab summer sunnies - check out this selection!

WHIMSICAL WALLETS - I used to carry around a giant wallet until I realized those don’t really work for me. So I switched to only carrying the essentials in little coin purses that make me smile. Not exactly great for organization, but they make me smile and they’re great for traveling to Europe with all the coins haha. Anthro currently has a few that are really cute!

STOCKING UP ON TRAVEL ESSENTIALS - This summer is SLAMMED with travel - no joke I think I’ll be home for maybe 1-2 weeks each month (just the way I like it). So I’m getting ahead of my travels and stocking up on essentials. Here’s what I’m currently restocking:

  1. This is the only phone case I travel with and it’s time for me to get a new one since my current one is a bit beat up lol

  2. A new power bank because they now come in fun colors and my boring black one needs to go haha.

  3. Nothing better than a good under eye patch on a plane - these are my new favs.

  4. Call me extra but I love a fuzzy slipper for the hotel room cause walking around in bare feet gives me the ick.

  5. The only sunscreen that I use that feels like I have nothing on my face - it’s magic!

Happy Easter & Passover to those who are celebrating!

I’ve been really leaning into my Rich Mom persona lately (PS her name is Ahhhlexandra). Last Sunday I took my first tennis lesson with my gal pal Rachel through Toss and Spin. If you live in Chicago and are interested in picking up Tennis, I can’t recommend them enough. If you saw my Instagram stories you know how silly I looked but I gotta admit, I HAD A BLAST.

Suddenly I turned 30 and now I’m picking up all these hobbies lol. French classes, tennis lessons, what’s next? Bowling league!?! HAHA, that actually sounds fun.

I’ve been really trying to make an effort to carve out at least one day a week where I take a break. Idk if you can relate, but as an early entrepreneur I blur the lines between work and business hours all the time. I mean heck as I write this it’s 9 p.m on a Saturday.

But I always remind myself of how LUCKY I am that this is my job. I’ve been really working to reframe anything that I might think is a tedious task to try and remember to have a deep sense of gratitude that I GET to do that task. Because I remember in the not so distant past, a time when I was crying on my way to work every day wishing that I had this level of freedom.

And now, I HAVE IT.

This week ended on a truly high note when Linda and I attended an event for Belmond Hotels at the University Club of Chicago. Belmond hotels are some of the most luxurious and exclusive hotels around the world. The company was founded in 1976 when they acquired the keys to Cipriani in Venice, from there they started collecting carriages from the Venice Simplon Orient Express (yes THE Orient Express). What I love most about this brand is that each of its hotels has a truly unique flavor, decor and design that is representative of the destination.

Anyways, as many of these industry events do, there was a drawing at the end to stay at their properties in Brazil and sure enough, I WON! So, your girl is going to Brazil (when, who knows lol) to stay at their Copacabana Palace in Rio & the Hotel das Cataratas, just steps away from, Iguassu Falls!

IF YOU’VE BEEN TO BRAZIL AND HAVE TIPS - PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

PS - pro tip, if you want to win more raffles, get bigger business cards ;) that’s my secret - they stand out in the bowl and are easier to grab.

THESE MOROCCAN BAGS - I recently discovered this incredible Moroccan bag company thanks to my Pencil & Paper Creative Club Monthly Happy Mail Subscription. The company is called El Rakan and it was founded by a husband and wife duo who fell in love with the Moroccan artistry and wanted to create a company for their young son (who the company is named after). I can’t get over how affordable and adorable the bags are! I’ve linked some of my favs below!

THE BEST $10 YOU WILL EVER SPEND IF YOU DRINK RED WINE - Linda got a little aggressive with her hand gestures the other night and knocked over her glass of red wine right onto one of my favorite Trina Turk sets that just happened to be pure silk. Needless to say, I didn’t have high hopes for getting the stain out. Nevertheless, the kind staff at Venteux (you need to eat there if you haven’t yet) gave me this MIRACULOUS red wine spray and guess what?!? IT WORKED!!! I soaked the stain, then soaked the pants in ice-cold water the next day and to my surprise and delight the spray was GONE.

KURT GEIGER’S NEON BAGS - Need a hot bag for hot girl summer 2022? I’ve got you covered. If you’re a fellow color lover like me I think you’re going to love their new line. I’ve linked some of my favorites below!

GEARING UP FOR MEMPHIS!

I’m getting ready to head down to Memphis in a couple of weeks and I decided to re-watch the video that I created for Memphis Travel last year and it got me SO excited to return. If you’ve not visited before, you HAVE to add Memphis to your list. I often feel like it gets overlooked by travelers who have a myopic focus on Nashville. But I’ve gotta say this cultural hub has truly something for everyone & the food and music scene is incredible!

Check out my Memphis Guide below and this written guide with all the locations laid out in 4-day itinerary!

I’M SPILLING THE TEA ON MY WEDDING…I MEAN 30TH BIRTHDAY PARTY LOL

Why has no one invented a time machine yet? Like we can go to the moon but we can’t turn back time? I’d argue the latter is WAY more useful than a trip to the moon (but I’m also someone who is scared sh*tless of space lol).

Anyways, until someone invents a time machine, I have been re-living my 30th birthday celebration in Palm Springs over and over in my head for the past week.

Some of the most common messages I got during and after this trip were “Where can I book, who did you use for catering, what are these “Manservants” etc.” And you know me, I’m all about efficiency so I wanted to put together a FULL recap post that details EVERYTHING you’d want to know about my Desert Disco 30th.

I’m BEYOND proud that I was able to partner with majority woman owned businesses to make this party a success and it would mean the world to me if you would check them out.

Each of the vendors we partnered with worked SO incredibly hard to make this photoshoot / party a success and if you’re planning any sort of event, party, soiree in the Greater Palm Springs area now or in the future, please use this post as a reference point!

Desert Disco 30th

A full recap of my wedding style 30th birthday party in Palm Springs. I’ve linked EVERYTHING you’ll need to re-create your own disco themed soiree. PLUS you’ll find contact information for each of the vendors we worked with!

Aside from slipping back into my routine and gearing up for our first Gals Abroad Getaways trip to France & putting the finishing touches on our second trip (destination and date announcement coming soon make sure you’re signed up for my group trip newsletter so you can be the first to know!!) I’ve been head down workin away!

Over the past few days some really crazy new opportunities have come my way and this morning I had a pinch me moment where I was like, "is this really all happening?”

MINDFULNESS TIP:

IDK if you’ve seen this before but one of the things I think I saw someone do on TikTok (lol of course) was write down on a little piece of paper a win when it happens - could be HUGE, could be small, either way write it down. Then you put it in a pretty jar - I personally like this one - and at the end of the year or maybe when you’re having a low moment, you can look at those wins and think DAMN I’m killing it.

I’ve tried to be really intentional (some days this doesn’t happen) about writing in my journal and documenting these, let’s call them - HOLY SH*T - moments so that years from now I can look back and remember these moments when I was building this biz brick by brick.

And I think no matter whether you’re an entrepreneur, cat mom, wife, or just someone who’s trying to figure out their passion and purpose in life - recording and documenting life’s big moments is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.

OKAY WOW WHO DO I THINK I AM OPRAH?!

Anyways, I hope this little tangent was helpful to you ;)

RICH MOM WALKING WITH MY BALA BANGLES - I’ve recently done a deep dive into the It’s Me Tinx social media stratosphere. For those who don’t know, Tinx rose to fame on none other than TikTok and has since been dishing out unfiltered, relatable, raw advice for in her weekly AMAs (Ask Me Anything) which have now turned into a podcast (that I’ve been binging). Anyways, she has this thing called RMW (Rich Mom Walking) where you put on your bala bangles (very aesthetically pleasing wrist weights) and walk the neighborhood or to get coffee. HERE’S THE PODCAST WHERE SHE EXPLAINS IT.

I have since adopted this habit - mainly because it’s finally nice enough to consider stepping outdoors but also because I think it’s a nice way to get my body moving & start my day. I hope you’ve enjoyed this deep explanation into what a Rich Mom Walk is.

Also, thanks to all my pals on IG, I have dubbed my new suburban personality “Ahhhlexandra” because at this point I’m getting WAYYYYY too comfortable living in the suburbs and I’m starting to adapt. GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!!

HERE’S MY BALA BANGLE PICKS

BAG BORROW OR STEAL - In one of my recent Reels I shared my secret to carrying designer bags without paying designer prices - spoiler alert - it’s Bag Borrow or Steal. You know I’m a rental service junkie and this one is honestly brilliant. Because luxury prices are just too silly to spend sometimes on novelty bags you might only wear a handful of times. Or heck, even if you just want to test drive a bag you’re thinking about purchasing.

I’m working on a discount code for you guys (YAY!), but until then, check out some of the bags you can rent.

HERE’S SOME OF THE BAGS I’VE GOT MY EYES ON

CURRENTLY READING - I’ve heard it recommended A TON OF TIMES but I’m finally diving into Atomic Habits and I’m already in love (listened to it on my Rich Mom Walk lol). If you’re looking to get healthier, improve a skill, advance in your career, or heck just be an overall better human this book breaks down the science behind making tiny little changes that make a huge impact on every area of your life.

HAPPY ENDING

Because I’m clearly obsessed with Tinx here’s one of my favorite reels of hers so you too can hop on the Tinx bandwagon with me. Be warned you will fall down the rabbit hole haha.

I’M SO SORRY I GHOSTED YOU…

MARCH WAS WILD AND CRAZY BUT IT WAS FULL OF JOY, HAPPINESS, AND ABUNDANCE AND HONESTLY WHAT MORE COULD I ASK FOR FOR MY BIRTHDAY MONTH?!

I should have known this last month would be like this because when I pulled my tarot cards for each month of the year on my little Getaway at the top of 2022 I pulled the 9 of cups for March. This card is often referred to as the wish card and means that you’re going to experience emotional fulfillment, happiness and contentment.

CHECK, CHECK AND CHECK.

But I hate that I haven’t popped into your inbox in a while…so this is me groveling and asking for forgiveness + wanting to share a gazillion updates at the same time lol.

BDAY CELLY:

Turning 30 and celebrating in Palm Springs at The Pond Estate with some of my favorite humans was EXACTLY how I envisioned marking this monumental BDay. It was like having my worlds collide in the best possible way and I couldn’t be more grateful to EVERYONE who helped me celebrate & sent well wishes. Birthdays always blow me away with how many people are kind enough to remember the day you were born - like that’s really nice (profound…I know haha).

I’m going to be putting together a HUGE wrap-up complete with a video, photos and ALL the details you’ll need in case you ever find yourself in PS & wanting to throw a little soiree!

But until I’ve got that post up and running, here’s a little looksie at some of my favorite photos from the weekend!

PS - Poppy (the luxury vacation rental company that manages The Pond Estate) is officially launching their website in mid-April and they have 130+ properties that you need to know about if you ever want to rent a home in Greater Palm Springs.

TARGET X STONEY CLOVER LANE - please tell me I’m not the only one who set her alarm for 2 a.m. so I could be the first one to snatch all of these incredible goodies?! And then subsequently go to the store to see if I could find the items that were sold out online?!

IF you’re new to Stoney Clover Lane, this company is my GO-TO for all my colorful travel customizable organizational gear. This is the company I used to design my Alle Abroad backpack! And I have a ton of their pouches to keep my makeup, hair care and odds and ends organized when I travel. Their products are QUALITY but often come with a bit of a higher price point (which I think is well worth it).

So when I heard that Target was collabing with them to make a more affordable line of goodies just for Target I knew I needed to be all over it. They also have items that you might not otherwise find on the Stoney Clover Lane website like bathing suits, pool floats, and sandals.

I’ve linked some of my favorite things that are still available below.

EVERYTHING JULIA CLANCEY

I got so many questions about the dress I wore for my 30th and I’m thrilled to share that it was designed by the one and only Julia Clancey. You might remember her fabulous masks that I discovered at the beginning of the Panini and since then I’ve been lucky enough to get to know this fabulous, fierce, British designer.

She is known for her bold, bright and beyond beautiful kaftans and turbans that couldn’t be more perfect for a Palm Springs poolside party or a luxury vacay ensemble.

I’ve linked some of my favorite pieces below, in case you’re in the market ;)

I HAVE HUGE NEWS!

I’m writing this email on the plane as I’m headed out to Palm Springs to once again host the BNP Paribas Open & stick around for essentially all of March to work, play and celebrate my 30th birthday at one of the most EPIC homes I think I’ve ever been lucky enough to stay in (wait till you see…)

But that’s not the news…this is:

I’M SPEAKING AT TRAVELCON AND I’M GOING TO BE TEACHING ATTENDEES “HOW TO BE FEARLESS ON CAMERA”!

My talk will take attendees through my 5 steps to help anyone get more comfortable speaking on camera, creating videos, doing interviews, speaking on panels or heck even just showing up and speaking to your community on Instagram Stories.

To all my fellow travel lovers, creators, travel industry professionals - THIS IS THE TRAVEL CONFERENCE YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS.

TravelCon has always held an incredibly special place in my heart because I consider it the conference that really skyrocketed my career in the travel industry. I can say with 100% certainty that the incredible opportunities that have come my way in my very short time working in this space would have NEVER happened if it hadn’t been for me attending TravelCon in 2019…

HERE’S SOME EXAMPLES:

  • Getting featured in Forbes *twice* - introduced myself to a freelance writer for Forbes at the conference

  • Working with Memphis Travel in 2021 - met the marketing team at the Media Marketplace and stayed connected

  • Winning 2 Premium Economy tickets on Singapore Airlines (trip been postponed due to COVID) & met a dear friend Sally in the process - all thanks to TravelCon

  • Getting featured in the NYTimes - TravelCon

  • All my work with ASTA, making videos in Europe last summer and speaking at their global travel convention - ALL BECAUSE OF CONNECTIONS I MADE AT TRAVEL CON

  • I had the chance to make incredible friends and connections with inspiring people like Glo Atanmo, Jeff Jenkins and Jess Parker

  • I got to learn and network with the likes of Kiersten Rich (@TheBlondeAbroad), Mike Corey (@fearlessandfar) & Kristin Luna (@lunaticatlarge) - CLICK HERE FOR THIS YEAR’S LIST OF SPEAKERS

  • I was able to meet & connect with journalists for major publications, tourism boards, hotels, & some of the biggest travel brands out there - that eventually turned into partnerships

  • Oh and did I mention the parties each night are EPIC?

I’m telling you, if you’ve ever dreamed of creating a career in travel or you currently work in the industry and you’re simply looking to uplevel, network & connect with others who share your passion - THIS IS WHERE YOU NEED TO BE AT THE END OF APRIL.

  1. ALL THE TRAVEL ORGANIZATION - I recently re-discovered this brand that sells chic, eco-friendly clear bags, clutches, and pouches that are TSA and stadium approved! I am ALL about the organizational items when it comes to keeping my sh*t straight when I’m traveling. And these pouches are incredibly well made, come in a ton of different shapes, styles and colors.

    1. I currently have this large pouch but I’m looking into getting this case that would be great for makeup & this one for all my toiletries!

  2. HAPPY MAIL - If you caught my IG stories last night you saw this month’s P&P Creative Club Happy Mail Box and all the goodies that came inside (that’s where I got my new Truffle Pouch). This monthly subscription box is filled with some of the most carefully curated goodies - everything from $50 gift cards, art prints, glassware, jewelry, travel projects and more (usually valued at $250 or more a box)! You have to check out the sequin beach bag that’s in next month’s box. I normally run away from subscription boxes but this one is SO legit!

  3. PUBLIC SPEAKING BOOKS - With my talk at TravelCon and a HUGEEEEEEEE speaking opportunity coming up at the end of the summer (details when the contracts are signed lol) - I have been devouring books about how to be an impactful public speaker. If you’ve got a presentation coming up or you just want to get better at public speaking - snag this book. I just finished it and it has some of the BEST tangible tips & recommendations + tons of hilarious disaster stories about when talks go wrong that are sure to make you laugh and worry a bit less about having something misspelled on your slides lol. Also, I am currently reading Talk Like TED (as in TED Talks) and it’s fully of great takeaways as well.

  4. THE NEW AWAY LUGGAGE - One of the questions I’m asked all the time is “What’s your favorite brand of luggage” and much like many of my seasoned travel pals, my answer isn’t revolutionary….IT’S AWAY. And there’s no comparison. I love the style, I love the smooth roll of the wheels but above all I love the lifetime warranty. They just came out with the most gorgeous lavender color and I’m really trying to hold myself back from dropping all my pennies on a new set of luggage lol. But in case you’re in the market - here’s $20 off.

HAPPY ENDING

Since I’m turning 30 later this month, this reel really hit home hahahaha. Does anyone else relate?!

MIXED EMOTIONS…

I want to preface what I’m about to write with the caveat that I’m not sure I’ll have the right or most eloquent words to talk about what’s going on in the world right now but I feel it’s important to use this newsletter to do just that and share what’s been on my heart.

To be honest, I don’t think I have fully wrapped my mind around the enormity and devastation of what’s happening in Ukraine right now or the ripple effects that will come from this crisis.

It’s unthinkable to believe that in this day and age a mad man can take land and start wars on a whim like we’re in the Middle Ages. I won’t begin to pretend that I understand the political intricacies of this complex situation but it’s my opinion that in war…no side ever really wins.

As someone who considers themselves a global citizen, to be traveling in Europe while this has been unfolding has been interesting. It’s a situation that weighs heavy on the world’s mind, especially for those closest to what’s happening.

It’s difficult to articulate how complex the dual feeling of joy and sadness is while I close out this trip to Italy and think about all that’s unfolding around me. This trip has been nothing short of luxurious and perfect in every possible way. But it’s hard to square my joy and privilege with all the suffering taking place right now.

Travel is an immense privilege. Having a strong passport is a privilege. Waking up in our warm beds, pouring our morning coffee and safely snuggling our pets or loved ones is the ultimate privilege.

It’s an assumption on my part, but I hope that from our place of privilege as you safely (hopefully) read this newsletter we all find ways to support the people of Ukraine - I have included resources further down in this week’s newsletter.

It never ceases to amaze me how there can be so much beauty and suffering in the world taking place at the exact same time. I had a different plan for this week’s newsletter, what I’ve written below is what I’d hoped to start with. I hope it’s alright that I share both updates with you.

ITALY UPDATE

I don’t think anyone will be shocked to hear that I’ve fallen madly in love with Italy - I know it’s a feeling that many of us lucky enough to have visited this magical place share. And even if you’ve not visited just yet, I have a feeling that it’s pretty high on your must-visit list.

From the incredible scenery, expansive history, mouth-watering food and welcoming people - Italy just knows how to do EVERYTHING right.

I skipped last week’s newsletter to try and squeeze every last second I could out of our time in Tuscany and I hope you understand the need for a bit of balance while I’m on the go. But now that I’m back, I’m going to be working on putting together guides/posts/etc recapping our adventures - because you would not believe how many of you told me you’re traveling to Italy this year lol.

SPEAKING OF WHICH…

If you ever want to work with Scorby Travel to plan your perfect Italy adventure, Linda is just an email away - LAPscorbytravel@gmail.com

AND/OR - If you’re interested in traveling to fabulous destinations with a group of likeminded women, make sure that you’re signed up to receive my Gals Abroad Getaways newsletter…(Different from this one that comes out every Sunday) I’ve got some future trip plans I want to share soon ;)

CIAO DA ROMA!

Did anyone guess correctly?! Linda and I are living La Dolce Vita in Italy for the next 10+ days and wow…friends…Italy is everything and more. It’s been nearly 10 years since I’ve been to Italy and this is my first time in Rome. Have you ever been/is it on your must-visit list?!?!

We’ve been here for a little more than a day at this point and I know I might sound like a broken record but I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS CITY. We’ve already grown one whole pant size with all the pasta, pizza and red wine we’re having and I’m honestly HERE FOR IT.

PS - Don’t let anyone tell you Rome isn’t pretty or blah blah blah come and decide for yourself. Because personally, I’m in awe of the incredible way that Rome’s ancient history and architecture are woven into modern-day Rome. You see ancient brick walls or columns that are hundreds (heck thousands) of years old growing out of buildings that now are apartments, shopping centers or restaurants. It’s really pretty unreal.

PRO TIP - If you want to massively avoid crowds of tourists come in February. This is not the typical time that many tourists visit Rome and you will see a significant difference between now and the summer months when the city is overwhelmed with crowds. Even so, there are A SH*T TON of people here. It may be due to the fact that it’s Valentine’s Day weekend or that Rome just dropped some COVID restrictions but honestly if it’s busy now, I shudder to think what it will be like in the summer…

Linda and I are here on a work trip meeting with hotels, tour operators and restaurants that we will ultimately want to place our clients at and all I have to say is get ready for the content that’s going to come from this trip - it’s gonna be a lot (in a good way).

We’re here for a few more days before we head to another favorite Italian destination so make sure you’re following along on IG for the day-to-day shenanigans lol.

Also, lol to spending Valentine’s day in one of the most romantic destinations with your mom - tell me your single without telling me your single am I right?!?!

CURRENTLY OBSESSING OVER

  1. CURRENTLY LISTENING TO - One of my favorite podcast’s is NPR’s life kit which essentially tackles topics on anything from figuring out your finances, how to get over someone and even how to FINALLY organize all the photos on your phone. Recently they’ve been doing a lot of episodes focusing on tips for creatives and freelance workers that I’ve found extremely helpful. I loved their recent episode Financial advice for artists who think they're 'bad with money'" and “How to make sure you're paid for your time and work” - check these and more episodes out right here.

  2. WOMEN SUPPORTING WOMEN - In honor of International Women’s Day, my extremely talented friend and Chicago-based photographer Pooja is hosting free portrait sessions to capture women in Chicago and honor their experience and portrayal of womanhood. If you’re interested in being captured you can apply via this link right here.

  3. I PULLED THE TRIGGER…. I finally caved and bought these classic shoes that just about everyone and their brother has and honestly I feel like these were a solid investment piece. Also, if there was 1 reason to come to Rome it would be to SAVE $$$ on designer items and get that VAT tax back babyyyyyy (among obvious other reasons to visit this incredible city lol).

HAPPY ENDING

This will be me tomorrow at lunchtime - COUNT ON IT HAHA.

ONTO THE NEXT ONE…

Back from one destination and off to another! This week Linda and I head back to one country I am absolutely certain many of you will LOVE and would like to visit/return to. It’s honestly at the top of most of mine and Linda’s client’s bucket lists. But I’m not gonna tell you where we’re going just yet….MUAHAHA the suspense.

I always like to play a little guessing game on my Instagram before heading out on a trip for dramatic effect but also because the first person who guesses right, I always send them a little souvenir I picked up from the destination when I return home. IDK just something fun and cute I like to do for my #galsabroadsquad

So if you want to guess where Linda and I are headed next, pop over to my IG stories and tell me where you think we’re going. First-person to get it right gets a gift!

Outside of prepping for this trip, I’ve spent the week tieing up loose ends, selling my clothes (THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SHOPPED THE CLOSET SALE!), gearing up for some exciting new projects in the coming months and…avoiding doing my taxes…(anyone else like to get those done and out of the way early?!)

ANYWHOOOO, I’m gonna keep it brief this week but make sure you check out some of this week’s articles + this week’s Happy Ending Video if you ever wonder what it’s like living with Linda hahaha.

CURRENTLY OBSESSED WITH

  1. CURRENTLY READING: I have two really huge public speaking gigs this year that have me equal parts pooping my pants with nerves (lolz) and jumping up and down with excitement. Even though I’ve spent nearly 10 years working on-camera, public speaking in front of 100s of people in a live audience is definitely a different skill set that I’d like to sharpen. So, when I think of some of the best and most impactful presentations, almost all of them are TED talks…So it only made sense that I read Talk Like TED - The 9 Public-Speaking Secrets of the World’s Top Minds. And the tips in here are AMAZING. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to get into public speaking, hosting or even getting more comfortable speaking in front of others.

  2. NOISE-CANCELING HEADPHONES - I’ve got a long haul flight this week and for too long I’ve endured the pains of screaming children as I try and push my regular AirPods deeper into my ear to try and drown out the noise…NO MORE. I upgraded to Apple’s AirPods Pro and I’ll let you guys know if they work. Say a little prayer for me hahaha.

  3. BOOTS ON SALE - I’m a sucker for a good boot (especially ones that I can wear and walk-in for HOURS when traveling. These guys come in 3 different colors and they’re on MAJOR sale right now. I’m bringing them with me on this trip and will report back on walkability. Or if you don’t want to wait because the sale might be gone, test them for yourself :)

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT…

HAPPY ENDING

Abroad in Your Inbox Vol. 44

HOLA FROM PUERTO RICO!

It’s my first time to the island and I’m already making plans to come back because there is SO much to see and explore. I’m here on a short work trip with a fellow gal pal and travel advisor scoping out some hotels for our respective travel agencies which means LOTS of time touring and experiencing resorts for clients.

And while I do love a luxurious lounging by the pool trip at some of the islands best resorts - Puerto Rico also has SO much to offer visitors that I feel 4 days here was not enough time. From the natural wonder that is their Bioluminescent Bay and the El Yunque National Forest to the wild horses that run around Vieques island and the colorful buildings that bring Old San Juan to life. Puerto Rico is truly a destination that deserves at least a week if you want to truly dive into its beauty.

GETTING HERE: Puerto Rico is SO easy to get to from Chicago (just about a 4 hour direct flight) and the entire COVID entry process was honestly the most seamless experience I’ve had since traveling during COVID. Plus it’s nice that you don’t have to test on return like you will in other Caribbean destinations. About 80% of the island is vaccinated and they take masking & COVID protocols VERY seriously (you’re asked for your vaccine card at hotels, bars & restaurants).

I’ll be putting a destination guide together but until then here’s some recs to hold you over:

  • For a blissfully relaxing stay where your days are filled with massages, long walks in nature, lounging by the pool or reading a book beachside - you have to check out the luxe St. Regis Bahia Beach

  • If you’re looking for a more lively atmosphere, pool parties and one of the best beaches in Puerto Rico & you want to be closer to Old San Juan - look at the Fairmont El San Juan

  • For a mind blowingly delicious, elevated Puerto Rican meal you HAVE to snag a reservation at Jose Enrique. This was easily my favorite meal of the entire trip and the chef has done a phenomenal job of showcasing the islands classic dishes.

  • Be sure to walk around Old San Juan because the colorful buildings are STUNNING - pop into La Factoria for some of the best cocktails on the island.

More to come, but if it wasn’t before, put Puerto Rico on your must visit list - especially in January and February (the weather has been PERFECTION in the 80s every day)
