IF YOU’VE BEEN AROUND ME FOR MORE THAN 15 MINUTES, CHANCES ARE I’VE ALREADY RECOMMENDED 2-3 PODCASTS TO YOU.

Yup, you can call me the crazy podcast lady.

I LOVE PODCASTS!! This statement makes me laugh because when I was in college my mom would say “You should listen to more podcasts.” I used to laugh at her and think, what are these stupid podcast things she’s pushing on me. Well, as the saying goes… mom always knows best. Cut to a year after I graduated and I’m hooked on a little podcast called Serial. (I kinda feel like this was most everyone’s podcast gateway drug).

Now, I can’t imagine my life without them. Sounds dramatic, I know, but podcasts are so entrenched in my daily routine. I listen to them while drinking my morning coffee, while I’m getting ready, driving somewhere, cooking, cleaning, okay you get the point.

So today, I wanted to share a list of my ALL TIME favorite podcasts. Everything from true crime podcasts to health and wellness focused ones. Oh and of course there’s a few travel related ones sprinkled in there.

HOW I BUILT THIS

NPR is the OG of podcasts and this show is one of my favorites. It’s hosted by Guy Raz and it’s all about the stories behind the world’s best known companies. From how Spanx was started to the ins and outs of how Bumble came to be. I love this podcast because I’m always so interested in learning how some of the most successful people got to where they are now. This is the podcast that tells those stories.

PODCASTS TO KEEP YOU INFORMED

THE DAILY

I no longer watch morning news. I just can’t do it anymore after YEARS of religiously watching GMA every day before work. Now, I start my day with The Daily. It’s a podcast from the New York Times, hosted by Michael Barbaro. The Daily dives deep into ONE main top story every Monday-Friday and also keeps you up to date with some of the other top stories taking place that day. It’s about 20 minutes so no excuse not to know what’s going on.

EMBEDDED

What we hear in the news is only a snapshot of the full story. Embedded host Kelly McEvers takes those snapshots and goes in-depth. This NPR podcast tackles topics like digging into the Trump administration’s past to stories on police shootings caught on video. Embedded takes you further into the story and makes news digestible.

FRESH AIR

This was the first podcast I ever listened to. I grew up hearing Terry Gross over the radio (Linda is a big fan) so naturally when I was getting into the podcast world I had to download Fresh Air. This magazine style podcast tackles anything arts, culture, politics, etc. Basically, if there’s an important person in the world that you need to know about, Terry Gross is probably interviewing them on her podcast.

THIS AMERICAN LIFE

Another OG NPR podcast. It’s a weekly public radio show hosted by Ira Glass. Each week the show picks a theme and brings together different stories on that theme. This honestly is such a random show, but it’s SO good. I love the stories of every day people that the show features. Not only that, they do some weird stuff like broadcast for 24 hours at an all night restaurant or put together their own band from musician’s classified ads. I know I’m not doing that great of a job describing this but it’s really hard to put into words what this podcast does. So just listen and see if you like it.

PODCASTS ABOUT HEALTH AND WELLNESS

2019_Almost30_CoverArt_FINAL_iTunes.jpg

ALMOST 30

This podcast is a recent discovery of mine and the first few episodes had me laughing out loud by myself in my car. I probably looked insane but who cares because this podcast is FULL of funny moments and incredible info. Everything from learning about ayahuasca to the ins and outs of the Keto Diet. Krista Williams and Lindsey Simcik are true thought leaders. The podcast started out as the two hosts were transitioning from their 20s to 30s but now it’s so much bigger than that. The guests they have on and the topics they tackle are so relevant and illuminating. I’ve learned about so many things I NEVER heard or thought of before. And their community is GOALS. Seriously download it now, even if you’re over 30, don’t let the name fool you!

TRAVEL PODCASTS

WOMEN WHO TRAVEL

Condé Nast Traveler editors Lale Arikoglu and Meredith Carey dissect the realities of traveling as a woman today and discuss a wide range of topics you’ve been wondering about but never knew where to find the answers. Their interviews and round table discussions cover topics like: where to travel this summer or how to tackle the daunting travel points game. The conversations are real and informative and bring together female movers and shakers in the travel industry.

TalkingPoints-1.jpg

TALKING POINTS

This podcast is actually hosted by The Points Guy, aka Brian Kelly. Each week he talks to top executives in the points-and-miles world, influencers and TPG staff. The podcast gives you tangible tips to make you a smarter traveler and save some money along the way.

MILES AWAY

I’m sure you’ve heard of The Points Guy (I literally just talked about him…). Well the company has put out another podcast. Miles Away is all about the destination, and how to get there. The podcast explores destinations like Cape Town, New York City and Singapore and gives you recommendations on what to do in the destination and how to use points and miles to get there.

TRUE CRIME PODCASTS

220px-Dirty_John_Podcast_Logo.jpeg

DIRTY JOHN

Into stories about sociopaths? Surprisingly I am… IDK what that says about me… ANYWAYS, Dirty John details the true crime story of con man John Meehan and his relationship with Debra Newell. The podcast takes you through the story of their romance after the two met on the internet (dun dun dunnnnnnnn). As the relationship gets more serious, things get REALLY weird. There’s deception, denial, mystery and the whole story will keep you on the edge of your seat! Also it’s been turned into a TV series on Bravo.

DR. DEATH

This is honestly one of the most insane stories I HAVE EVER HEARD. I listened to all the episodes on a 7 hour road trip and was actually yelling out loud WTF (I’m not one to normally scream at the radio lol). Dr. Death goes in depth into one of the most egregious stories I’ve ever heard of. The story follows Christopher Duntsch, a Texas surgeon who was convicted of gross malpractice after thirty-one of his patients were left seriously injured after he operated on them, and two patients died during his operation. The stories you hear in this podcast are heartbreaking and will have you SERIOUSLY questioning some of the practices in our medical system. Listen ASAP.

OverMyDeadBody-300x300.jpeg

OVER MY DEAD BODY

This is ANOTHER podcast from Wondery (The same network that brought you Dirty John and Dr. Death) and just like its sister podcasts, Over My Dead Body is SO GOOD. The first season is about a high powered attorney couple and their EXTREMELY messy divorce. And when I say messy, I mean one of them winds up dead…(It’s not a spoiler, I promise). The podcast takes you through the twists and turns of the case as you try to figure out what lead this couple on a path to destruction. It’s another binge worthy podcast FOR SURE.

SERIAL

This was the podcast that started my podcast addiction. And I honestly think I’m not alone in saying that. Serial is an investigative journalism podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig. I feel like it’s safe to say this is the OG True Crime podcast. You might be familiar with the topic of the first season: Adnan Syed is accused of killing his high school girlfriend. But did he really do it? Or has he been wrongly accused and imprisoned. Since the first season there’s been two others that tackle totally different topics. Each season is thrilling and SUPER in depth. It’s totally worth a listen and it will make your commutes much more interesting.

512.jpg

UNCOVER

The first season goes in depth on the real life operations of the alleged sex cult called NXIVM (pronounced Nexium). This was a podcast I was telling anyone who would listen about, like I almost told a stranger on the street about it…That’s how good it is. The podcast GOES DEEEEEEPPPP into what drew in members, the requirements to be in the cult (I’m talking branding and having people above you called masters) and actual interviews with some of the higher authority figures in the cult. This podcast is INSANE. The second season is all about an investigation into a plane that mysteriously crashed in Canada and killed all 52 people on board.

220px-Up_and_Vanished.jpeg

UP AND VANISHED

If you’re looking for a twisty, turny, who done it podcast, Up and Vanished is for you. It’s an investigative journalism podcast hosted by Payne Lindsey that takes an in-depth look into the cases of people who have gone missing. The stories are heartbreaking and crazy and have you saying under your breath “what the hell…” Seriously worth a listen.

JUST FOR FUNSIES

HOMECOMING

This is a scripted podcast that I actually liked. I’ve been confused a few times with scripted podcasts because sometimes they don’t say they’re scripted from the beginning. There was this one I listed to a few episodes of where a whole bunch of people disappeared from a town and I TOTALLY thought it was a true story. I was googling this town and wondering why I hadn’t heard of it in the news, LOL. Anyways, Homecoming centers on a caseworker at an experimental facility, her ambitious supervisor, and a soldier eager to rejoin civilian life — presented in an enigmatic collage of telephone calls, therapy sessions, and overheard conversations. The result is an innovative, immersive audio experience — a mystery unfolding across the twelve episodes of Seasons One and Two.

SUPER SOUL CONVERSATIONS

Anything Oprah does is magic, so unsurprising that her podcast would be totally inspiring and up-lifting. In it, she interviews thought-leaders, best-selling authors, spiritual luminaries, as well as health and wellness experts. The podcast is designed to light you up, guide you through life’s big questions and help bring you one step closer to your best self.
